Family.
Henri, in the upper left hand corner, just before he was drafted into the Wehrmacht. He went to France. His elder brother, who went to the Eastern Front, is in the front row center. And their father, who was a medic in WW1 and 2, is in the front row right.
And Henri today.
Henri, and his little brother, back row right, are the only surviving members of this group.
Since my daughter married the son of the youngest brother, and had my granddaughter, these folks have become my in laws.
And by the way, both my wife's father and grandfather fought on the American side, in France, in WW1 and 2.
My own father was a prisoner of the Japanese, for over three years, in WW2, and I had an uncle who fought in France, in WW1.
What a world!

More family.
And then we have Franz, on the right, just back from Yugoslavia, released from the SS to take care of his wife, who is dying of TB. She is on the left.
The three girls are there daughters. The one in the center is my daughter's husbands mother.
Franz may have been SS, but when he came back, and mother died, they were forced to hit the road as refugees, and dad was a hero to his girls. Without him, they would not have survived.
My granddaughter's German grandmother today.

And so...
And so, Erna and Friedrich grew up during the war.
Friedrich's father and brothers did not join up. They waited until they were drafted. Two of them became medics. And they all survived.
Erna's father joined the Allgemeine SS, but was released early on to take care of his sick wife and three daughters. They also survived the war.
Eventually Friedrich became a minister, met and married Erna, and they started a ministry together.
Today, the parents are gone. One of the three brothers is gone. One of the three sisters is gone. And there are children and grandchildren.
One of the granddaughters is mine.
What a story we will have to tell her. A story of ancestors who fought on opposite sides, in the most devastating war in human history.
And how they all survived, to carry on, as Living History.
