    Ηι!

Maybe this link could be of some help! There are some more details on the first burial site, the second being the cemetary of St. Constantine -Ag. Konstantinos in the city of Heraklion.

This link http://sjwalks.interkriti.org/hisbox06.htm is stating the area of Kaminia as the site of execution and first burial, close to the Canea Porta.

    Cheers, Giorgos

So, according to the article, he was tasked with setting up a partisan movement to fight the Germans? Is it possible a Cretean civilian could have betrayed him?

According to the info provided, he was captured by the Germans during the first days of the battle, in a fighting with paratroopers. The Germans initially provided medical treatment as he was a POW and later executed him, as he was not in uniform while in the house and his ID disks were taken.

When Pendlebury was executed, the battle for the island was not over. Greek army and police units were fighting alongside with Commonwealth troops and there was also a civilian uprise against the invading Germans. As the execution took place during the battle, with the area of Kaminia changing hands twice during one day, it is rather improbable in my opinion that a civilian might have betrayed him, in the middle of the battle. Plus the Germans knew where he was, as they were the ones who transported him to the house of Drossoulakis.

Collaboration with the occupation forces did exist, both with civilians on personal level, as well as with armed nationalistic groups, but it was something that started happening later during the same year, when the occupation was complete.

It is pretty possible that Pendlebury was known to the German agents before the battle, due to his archaeological mission. One should not forget that although G. Britain and Germany were in war since September 3 1939, Germany declared war against Greece on April 6 1941. Till then, German functionaries and agents could be present in the country.

          Cheers, Giorgos

I know that this isn't an answer to your question but I went to Crete last year, and posted a thread...

...there is a pic of Capt John Pendlebury's final resting place that I visited, if it is of any interest to you - I found the whole Crete story fascinating.
