    Favorite Battlefield Visit

Would like to hear what others think is the best or most enjoyable battlefield visit...include all wars. I loved Cassino, Normandy, Peleliu, Iwo Jima and Saipan. Also, what is the number one place you would want to visit, whether you've been there or not?

    Thanks in advance, Eric

My favorite is the route of Kampfgruppe Peiper through the Ardennes, December 1944 (been along that route many times).

What I'd like to visit but probably never will is Isandhlwana and Rorke's Drift (Zulu War) in South Africa.

      Best,
      Greg

I have been to Normandy, the Ardennes and to Hitler's bunker in France; Wolfsschlucht. When I was in France me and my father rented a house at Omaha Beach and stayed for a week. That was one of the best things I have done in my life! I love Normandy, it's very beautiful and you have things to do all the time like visit museums, walking on the beaches, looking at batterys and much more! I would like to go there again!

When I visited the Ardennes I also stayed for about a week. Like Normandy, you have things to do all the time because you can vistit so many museums, battlefields and so on. I recommend to go to Normandy and the Ardennes!

                Best wishes from Per.

SPECIFICALLY... devils den @ Gettysburg. The ghosts still haunt gettysburg.
I have a cannonball found in spanglers spring in the 50s by a kid whos now in his 60's. Its between 5 and 6 inches across, and has a dovetailed top that slid together . Its stored away , and I paid 50.00 for it at a yard sale out the tanneytown road from chambersburg , and almost to the battlefield , but maybe a few miles from town, back in the 80's right from the guy. He has a farm thats split by the highway, and had a shop at the time in the barn across the street. (before the first set of double sets of railroad tracks you run into just past the porno book store on the right.)
Gettysburg thats the place for me , except now its been vandalized so bad, especiall in the last several years , its a shame. I used to get blasted years ago,, and sit on the rocks , and feel the vibes . Its undescribeable. I see several others here also dont need to go to europe to enjoy seeing a fantastic battlefield.

                      battlefield

Verdun back in the 1970's when there were still tons of battle debris littering the area. Gasmasks, shells, messkits, belts, helmets, you name it. And at least one Gew. 98. The utter, depressing futility of it all.....

Normandy of course. Iwo would just be too awesome. Kursk has to be on my list as well. I have been to Gettysburg so many times it feels like a second home. Snuck onto the fields late at night and Devil's Den as well. Never came into contact with any ghosts though. (A few irate rangers were all I ran into) Spookiest place in Gettysburg is walking the Round Tops late at night. Gives me chills just thinking about it.

I've been to Gettysburg quite a few times as well, along with Antietam/Sharpsburg, Bull Run, Chancelorsville, Chickamauga and no doubt in the vicinity of quite a few smaller battles.
Gettysburg is a great little town, a college town of course, with many souvenier/relic shops off the beaten path.
Extremely nice terrain, and many of the small towns in the vicinity, like Cashtown, saw their share of marching armies and are well worth the visit.

Me and my cousin used to drive there every summer for about 6 years in a row, usually stayed 5 days to a week.
We drove in on the backroads from Collegeville, a small town not far from Valley Forge, of course another very historic area in the USA.
Probably about a 120 mile drive.
Lots of roadside table sales, very interesting stuff ,,, And some pretty hot Amish girls as well.

I had to bust out laughing the first time I saw the sign "Welcome to Blueball, PA" - Pretty sure no battles went on there.

Hard to pick which one I'd like to go to, for the pacific I'd have to say Corregidor & Iwo, Europe I'd like to see the Somme & Normandy landing areas.
Gallipoli would be great, as would many areas in Russia.

Well, I have to some really cool sites so far among them were

                              - Huertgenforest
                              - the whole Battle of the Bulge sites in Belgium as well as in Luxembourg
                              - Normandy

I just came across another very interesting site where I will pay a visit in April - the battle of the Vosges mountions. In specific the Battle of Bruyeres which is considered one of the 10 moste severe battles fought of the US Army, as well as the resuce of the Lost Battalion (141st Inf Rgt / 36th Div) by the Nisei soldiers.

I would like to see Iwo Jima, Peleliu and Tarawa in the Pacific and I was just about to plan a visit to Peleliu but from Switzerland it's a far too long way to get there. So will stick to Europe. Also Verdun and the Argonne woods of WW1 will be on my list
