this is a very interesting post, and a generous one. i had read of hurtgen in after the battle magazine years ago, these fresh colour pictures add much to the impression of this site. but oh so little of the carnage. what hell these men must have seen, what chivalry too on both sides.

When I was there the memorial on the Kall Bridge was not there. I also had the pleasure to tour with the fomer Jagdpanther commander and KC holder Erwin Kressmann, who got the KC for his conter attack on Schmidt. His small unit belonging to the 519th Heavy Tankhunter Bat was attached to the 116th Panzer Division. Thre is private owned museum in Kommerscheidt where you can see all the dug up stuff which still cna be found today.

Well done Gran Sasso !! Another area i wanted to visted but ran out of time. Interesting area history wise and magnificent scenery , interesting battle in that it is not spoken about very often considering the amount of KIA approx 24,000 American troops dead & wounded one of WWII savage conflicts, the largely forgotten Battle of the Hurtgen Forest which was dubbed "The Death Factory" !! , a must see area next time round also a movie was done regarding this conflict called "When Trumpets Fade" but dont get to excited, movie was very average! Thanks for sharing Gran Sasso

Great thread Patrick! I was there with some friends in Feb '08 for a one day tour hosted by a German veteran of the battle who also wrote a book about it. If you don't mind I can post a few addtional photos in a few days.

Fantastic looking scenery.I definetly going to visit there someday.I can imagine the area in wartime, forrests like that are hell of a fighting places.

I wonder what is the status of wartime items there,i mean lots of unexploded ammunition must be around those forrests.
