    German Casemate on Omaha Beach

Today there is a German casemate with a huge anti-boat gun on the beach that covered the Vierville-Sur-Mer draw during the battle. Unfortunately, a metal grate now covers the entrance so that the gun is difficult to see. My question is why is this gun inaccesible to photos and what is the gun's history? Any Normandy experts out there?

The metal grate covers the embrasure not the entrance as I first stated. I think the gun is a 75mm but not sure.

Yes, that's it. Look at the metal fence in the front that hides the german field gun! I was disappointed that I could not take pictures of such a historical gun! I also don't like the big, concrete monument built atop of the strucutre...distracts from the casemate's original design.

What is the history of that casemate and how was it destroyed? Nice picture.

        Thanks, Eric

Are there any existing archival pictures of this gun casemate? Doesn't look like too much damage so I wonder if the Germans vacated the structure during the landing? What type of gun is inside....75mm'er? I wonder if the casemate in the back also housed a field gun?

          Thanks, Eric

            This R677 contains an 88mm PAK 41/43.

The "big, concrete monument built atop of the structure" is the US National Guard Memorial.

Thanks, Paul. That is big anti-boat gun! Surely it must have played a pivotal role in the battle!

                Hello,

Here are some pix (inside and outside) of the bunker with the 88mm pak 43/41.

                Regards.

                  Florian,

Excellent shots! Thank you. Where did you find them? I wonder how the US Naval support ships missed such an obvious target that enfiladed the beach? Are those official archival images?

                  Thanks, Eric

                    Hello,

Yes they are part of us army archives. On the first one you can see the signal corps stamp.
By the way, here is the bunker at the center of the actual photo.
(some photos are available on the web search engines... try some words like vierville sur mer bunker(s)...)

                    Regards.

                    Florian

Wow, that's a neat archival shot! I will search for this shot for comparisons to my recent photos like yours. From this front angle, you can see two large shell hits! It's amazing that gun is still inside!

                      Thanks again, Eric

Here is my Mum and fiancee on top of the bunker (reading my little tour guide I made for them all!!!) You can just see the edge of the metal grille in front of the gun to the left of them, just in case you think it's a pic of another gun!
