When I was a kid back in the '50's there used to be alot of travel documentaries on TV. I still remember one dealing with Libya or Egypt that showed a large area filled with tanks and vehicles still sitting in the desert. Like in Europe, however, almost all of it was gathered up by locals for scrap. I've even heard that dives were made on sunken ships off the coast to recover tanks and vehicles for scrap.

That being said, not too long ago a British Long Range Desert Group Chevy truck was found in the desert in a remarkable state of preservation. This was the subject of a cover article by "After the Battle" magazine. So it is still conceivable that some vehicles do remain undiscovered. I've wondered about the area around Bir Hakim. This area is more remote and might hold some possibilities. However, as indicated earlier and in another article in "After the Battle" about Tobruk, these areas are still infected with mines that are still fully functional.

        .

The said ordnance map I described which shows 1965 (re produced 1983) survey info from some of the North Afrika DANGER areas is now in possession of one of the moderators pending certain caveats/disclaimers I am disscussing with respect to human nature and legalities which i am not sure of. I am sure you will all understand if the forum chooses to or not to release it on this site and I am unsure if there are any copy rights on this maps reproduction. If it is released at the forums responsability you will be able to see at least the condition of the areas surveyed in up until 1965 time frame and some of what was left at that point for your own information.

        Best,

        Pete

also it's situated beside many tracks, paths and what looks to be roads. If it was a tank and it was that easy to get to it probably would've been snapped up years ago by an organisation

Is that where there are pictures of wrecked tanks 30 years after the battle? I remember it well, and it would have been in the early 1970's when that show was first televised. Has anyone seen this segment recently? Is it in color or black and white?

                Tigers

I heard a story that there is a German Supply Ship sunk in the Mediteranean with a load of Tigers on board. What a loss.

I believe there is many supply ships with other panzers like Sturmgeschutz and Panzer III/IV´s on board in mediterranean sea.I remember seen one Sturm raised from the mediterranean sea on some discovery channel document.

This captured my imagination, and I have recently tried to find any pictures or details regarding the so-called "Panzer Graveyard" that supposedly exists or existed for some time after the war.

It is said to be about 10 Km south of Sid Abd el Rahman. Here Gen Ritter von Thoma stood by his destroyed tank and faced the British 8th Army.

I presume these are the tanks I saw on that program som 35 years ago, and wonder if they are still there? I recall reading stories by travelers in Egypt in the 1970's or 1980's stating that many vehicle wrecks could be seen along the main road through the El Alamein battlefield. I know some vehicles are on display in the monuments at El Alamein, but I just wonder if there aren't wrecks still strewn throughout the battlefield where they were originally knocked out in 1942?

There is some kind of installation at 30 50 00 N, 28 49 00 E on Google Earth, that some think might be this site. Are there any knowledgeable Alamein buffs that can provide more info here? I understand that many parts of the Alamein battlefield are still inaccessible due to minefields. Is that correct?

yep and it's in colour. You can find the excellent boxed DVD set of "World at War" on eBay. It's easily the best documentary series on WW2.

I've read that over that years Bedouins and locals have stripped the Desert of anything with value ...including scrap value. They are not stupid however and , if an area is known as being "Hot" , they tend to avoid it.
Now there have been cases where hulks/wrecks were found in the Desert way off the beaten path and in pretty good condition (considering). Take the "Lady Be Good" B24 for example ..it was found with it's 50's still in place , Coffee still in the Thermos ..they reached it in 1959 untouched for 15 years.

Here's another article about an Italian Savoia-Marchetti S79 that was found in 1960--

interesting read that covers other items found as well.
                        ***********
After the Battle had an issue that covered the Libyan Desert ..they had pictures of PILES of Ordnance and Ammo still in Bunkers ..one Trench still had a full clip and a few Grenades sitting on the edge so they'd be handy ..
I think the "Rat Patrol" hooked me on the Desert War when I was a kid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfVQi...eature=related

Always wanted to visit Libya but from what I hear, most of the History we are interested in has been cleaned up -except for the UXO's
