Funny story is that, although he landed with his chute in the mountains, he was so eager to bring the parachute back to his airbase - as it was handed to him in good faith. So he took care of the "Luftwaffe-property".

When arrived back at his base, he saluted to his offizier, saying: "I am back from "Edelweiss"-picking"....

I know almost nothing about B-24's or the US Army Air Corps, but I wonder if those small square pieces you asked about could be some kind of "chaff" the planes dropped to "white out" the German radar???

I skied once on the Zugspitze in 2001. What an awesome place to be in April; skiing on the glacier by day, and having a beer in Garmisch in my t-shirt and shorts at night.

Right: handgrip (weapon?). Did anybody have a clue about the square metal-piece in the center? We found hundreds of those.

Those small square metal-pieces that you found are from a Flak Jacket. One Jacket was made (filled) wit many of those small iron plates.
