    Visiting some museums and cemeteries in Normandy

    I jus spent 3 weeks in Paris and Normandy, and took a few pictures that may be of interest.
    Here are some remains of "Wiederstandnest 62" at Omah beach just beside the US cemetery. Note the trench zigzaging at the left.

    A grave of a jewish soldier in the American cemetery. Many jewish graves has stones put on top of them, like it is shown at the end of the movie "Schindlers list"

      I had the luck of staying at a friends house in Arromanches. Out of my bedroom window I could see the remains of the Mulberry artificial ports that remain visible to this day.

          The Mulberries rest on the sand, in about 10 meters of water, depending on the tides

            This one is breacking in half. They are all slowly collapsing, and most have already disapeared.

                  A few kilometers from Arromanches, I found this "enchanted waterfall".

                    Apparently, an animal was taking a swim in the "enchanted river", not knowing it ended with an "enchanted waterfall".
                    The anmal fell down the 15 or 20 meters and died. This animal was one of the most disgusting things I ever saw. It lloked like an overgrown rat, andits tail was repulsive. Of course it looked mush bigger and impressive in real life.
                    I found out my giant rat is actualy a "ragondin", the live peacefully eating grass at the tops of the cliffs.

                      I wanted to visit the "Dead mans corner museum", and found the german cemetery of La Cambe on the way.
                      The german cemetery was the least interesting of the various cemeteries. The units of the men were not written, and there was obviously a lack of funds when the cemetery was made with most grave stones being used for to men, but sometimes more.
                      The commonwelth cemeteries were much more interesting and sad... More about that latter.

                        Here are some photos of the "Dead mans corner museum" collection. It was rather small, but there were some very impressive pieces presented in the museum: well worth the visit. It is truely a museum for collectors, as opposed to the other museums that are designed for tourists with little interest in militaria.
                        Here are a bunch of camo helmets.
                        Zoom ins of all these pictures are availlable upon request, if anyone wants to see more details about a particular helmet or uniform.l

                            This camo jumpsuit is identified to a particular paratrooper. He got wet, so took the uniform off and carried it in a bag. He was wounded when maning a captured german canon that exploded: a smart guy had the idea to blow a grenade up inside the barrel of the canon, because a shell casing refused to eject. The grenade blew out the shell casing, but not suprisingly the next round they tried to fire blew up in the barrel... Maybe a Darwin award would also be appropriate here?

                              The next helmet was amazing. It was pierced by a bullet, and then damaged by schrapnel within minutes while being worn. It is identified to the vet, and there was a TV showing the vet explain what happened to his helmet. Amazing!
