    St. Malo

Two weekends ago I made a 2 day trip to St. Malo and Mont St. Michel...originally just moreso tourism and see the sites, but when I arrived I realized how significant St. Malo was for the Normandy campaign! Thus I got to see lots of bunkers etc. I'm attaching a bunch of pictures with slight narration.

Going back a little further in history, the city's fort, built to protect the harbor from the English a few hundred years ago and manned by about 100. Cannons had a reach of 15-30 miles if I remember right...

A more recent reminder inside the fort walls... As the Allies closed in on the city the Germans forced many elderly and invalids into the fort walls...the allies weren't aware so they lobbed some artillery in, a shell killed the people listed...

Another semi-island (Grand Be) attached to the town. Low tide it looks like this, High tide, very much an island. There were a decent amount of german constructions on it.

Trying to see what's down below...

After the war most of the constructions on the island were destroyed to, as a tour guide said, 'bring the town back to normal'

Cite d'alet...the main German fort complex in the area. on a peninsula looking over the harbor across from the city.

Quite interesting to me, the US forces expected all the germans to be holed up in the city so focused on that, unaware that there were only about 40 left to watch it. I can't remember the exact date, but the forces held out in this fort of 3 stories underground until about August 20th (+ -), just a few days before Paris was captured! They endured incredible bombardment as well. Just to give you an idea of the underground complex, the statistic the tour guide used, was that just a smaller portion of the complex used an amount of concrete 2 times as heavy as the eiffel tower.

A photo of how the beaches looked during the occupation with the fort in the background. The house on top looks to be destroyed, so I believe this was taken after the battle
