    Re-Enacting Question: Uniform Manufacturers

    Hello All

Have a question and looking for a little help from those currently in the German Re-Enacting field.

Recently joined a unit and I am trying to put together my uniform. I need an M43 Tunic. Problem is I am a 48 Large size. Most of the places I have gone to are out of stock on many items and if they have a tunic, more often then not they are a regular size.

Can anyone recommend any help or point me in a direction.

I have gone so far as to check out E-Bay. I have seen a tunic that would fit, but I don't have any feedback to judge by as far as the quality of the materials, etc.. The version it is listed under is "Elite". I know this version is identified as coming from Singapore. Seems like more and more are coming out of Asia. Any to look at closer, any to avoid like the plague ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Give a man an opinion and you feed him for a day,
teach a man to use the "search" function on the WAF and you feed him for a lifetime.

      Andrew -

I believe you joined the LAH right? Welcome to reenacting. I recommend contacting Dan Rob, he's one of the 4th zug guys and can help you find a good supplier that is also accurate.

if you'd like to pm or email me, I can put you in contact with him.

        PM'd you.

Scorched, unfortunately neither has the 48L in stock, only the 48R.

Actually, maybe this is a more accurate question. What size tunic do guys that are tall (I'm 6'2") wear. Large or Regular ??

That is odd that you joined a unit and they did not assighn someone to walk you through the gear up process.

No, the unit has been helping me, the problem is trying to locate a vendor that has any tunics in my size. The sources they recommend seem to be out of stock.

They have advised me that they have gear available, but I'm trying to get as much as I can.

the L & R refers to the length of the tunics L for long R for regular and S for short. some people have longer arms and torso's than others yet still have the same chest size. A quick call to ATF and give them your arm length might be helpfull

IMO, stock is down for a lot of the US based reenactor companies (ATF, 1944, LB, etc) as they try and gauge the wave of new chinese companies and the resurgence of Sturm.

The uniforms and camoflage being manufactured by the miriad of Chinese based ebay sellers is improving, but still has a long way to go. It does appear that some are more conscience of their product while others forge ahead with whatever their wim is, in a sense, re-writing history, with their oak pattern FJ smocks, pea-dot helmet covers, etc.

The result of the deluge of cheap uniforms is that a lot of new and veteran reenactors are looking at ebay for their purchases, and the US based manufactures are holding back to see what happens. SM wholesale, who supplied a high quality selection of camouflage smocks (SS, FJ) to numerous stores hasn't made a new run of material in some time. Thus, it is difficult to get started and get started with correct material.

                Andrew - I pm'd you back.

                Best of Luck!

Avoid the wool uniforms from Asia on eBay, that stuff is total garbage.

                    Mike: Emailed you back !!

Chris: It has been tough going, at least for me. But again, my problem is that I can't use the Regular sizes because of my height. Unless I want to wind up looking like WSS Schütze Steve Urkel of the Panzergrenadier Division Nerd.

Problem I see is that like it or not, more and more Asian imports are going to be filling the voids left in the stock of many vendors. Even some of the bigger ones are looking east for supplies.

Hopefully they make the move to produce more quality uniforms.

Someone mentioned Janke, but their prices are just slightly high....... Maybe if I was using it as a display backdrop for some medals, but to run around the woods in battle.......

Have you tried on the size 48R blouses from LB or 1944? The end of the sleeve is not supposed to cover your wrist the way we are used to as 21st century Americans. The whole wrist should be visible. I know many tall reenactors who look great in LB uniforms, the proportions are there. One thing is for certain: you will never look like a German soldier wearing a field blouse from Barry Lyndon, Hong Kong Kieth or any of the eBay sellers from Asia.

                        Chris

I reached out to LB and they advised me that they feel their 48 will fit me fine, so it looks like I will go down that road. I don't want to be penny wise and pound foolish so to speak. I'd rather take my chance with a domestic firm with a good reputation.

I think my confusion stems from all the sites with different comments on "sizing". Some mention Longs, others don't mention any sizes, some only carry "regulars". So I was never really sure what was appropriate.

I contacted LB, provided them with my measurements and they advised me that it is their opinion the 48 will fit fine. I figure it's their business, they should know a lot better than me.

Thanks to all for the advice.

                          Andrew,

I wouldn't worry about the length of the jacket being too short. It was VERY popular for the Germans to actually shorten the length of their feldblusen. The length of the arms should go not further then your wrist bone. You should be able to see your entire wrist.

The M-43's came in different styles for the SS and the Heer. The Army M-43 had a 6 button front and 3 holes for the belt hangers while the SS M-43 had the 5 button front and 2 holes for the belt hangers.

I bought a Heer M-43 from China just to see what it would look like. GARBAGE! I could literally RIP the pockets off! Which I did. Stay away from it. If you can, go with Lost Battalions. You won't go wrong there.

Good Man! Just to let you know, when you try on the feldbluse, it's going to feel a tad uncomfortable in the armpits. This is normal! It's not supposed to fit like a modern day suit. Once you break it in (After sweating in it) and wear it in the field, it will fit you perfectly.

If you have any more questions, just post them to this list.

I thought I would just post a follow-up on this thread. I finally went ahead and purchased my uniform from ATF.

I wanted to say that they were great to deal with and I was amazed at the quick shipping. I would highly recommend them.
