The blown roadway looks like those along the northern coast on Sicily... The Germans blew out great sections of roads that ran alongside steep cliffs. The U.S. engineers miraculously were able to bridge them, enabling Patton's Army to get into Messina, but too late to cut off the Germans before they got across the straights. Too bad about the child... reminds me of the story of the Korean War when young girls were sent out into the fields to make sure there were no mines for the family cows to step on. The cows were more valuable than the girls. I guess it's all in the culture.
