You are right, it is between Leipzig and Dresden, not so far away from my home. You have to drive the highway A14 from Leipzig to Dresden and at Grimma you change to the road B107 and drive about 20 miles, then you are in Colditz. What do you want there. Do you you want to visite the former prisoner of war camp?

I've been fascinated with the Colditz story since I was about 10 years old. Just last week, I was re-reading P.R. Reid's book, and then did some follow-up internet searches. These were very useful:
official Colditz castle museum site: http://www.colditz.de/data/include_k...eumsch_eng.php
A very nice and detailed site is PBS's site. Go to the very bottom of the webpage and click on the various links to their other pages for photos, stories, interviews, prison map, etc.

Hope you have a great visit. If I ever get to the greater Fatherland, Colditz will be on my places to visit.

I******180;ve been there a couple of times and its very interesting.
I went in 1990 just after the fall of The Wall and it was just a small display in a very mouldy castle. I went again about 6 months ago and was very impressed with how they have renovated it. They even found a stash of clothing and tin cans from the prisinors while they were doing it. Quiet a few rooms have been returned to original condition and these is a nice display about the castle and its inmates.
Funnily most people in Germany have never heard of it. I was always fasinated by the TV series.
I actually have a friend here whose home town in Colditz, thats why we went again to see it.

Well, back from the trip to Colditz castle and I must say that it was not what I had expected to see. While the building itself is being renovated back to it's original incarnation as a medievil castle (and I must say quite impressive in it's own right), the period in history from it's time as an Oflag is very thin on the ground. With work underway to convert a whole section of it into a youth hostel, and an army of scaffolding ever-present, the feeling of trying to ascertain how it was 60 years ago is not easy. On the plus side there were some nice artefacts to see, in particular the german uniforms made by the prisoners, the dexteriy and imagination of these inmates cannot be underestimated! I asked the German tour-guide why there is so little of the time as an Oflag represented to which she replied "the Americans are not interested because they had no prisoners here, it is only the British who have any interest in it.............and anyway the swastika doesn't sell in this region!" In conclusion, worth a visit for the beauty of the castle alone but not worth it if you expect to find a great deal on the allied escapees. I will post some detailed photos soon if anyone is interested.

Colditz Photos.
OK, here we go. Before I start I must confess to not being the best photographer in the world, but I think you can get a decent idea of the place as it is now through the photos.
