Live ordinance that they collect and wrap up and is stored in a large above ground bunker. They said they take it out and blow it up once a year.

That's all, hoped you liked them. Unfortunately for me I only had one roll of film. We were getting ready to go back to Camp Pendleton so the funds were low. But what a great once in a lifetime experience. Duane

Is the island still a military zone or something?

Probably the best contemporary photos I have ever seen of Iwo Jima. It must have been a humbling experience standing on the beach and looking up at Mt. Suribachi.
                  Many thanks,
                  John

                    Duane,
A very informative tour. I just finished reading "Flags of Our Fathers" by James Bradley. His father was one of the flag raisers in Rosenthal's picture. It was not untill he passed away that his family learned that he had earned the Navy Cross for his actions there on Iwo Jima. He never talked of his time in service. His son wanted to know more of what his father did there and in the process wrote this book dealing with the flag raisers. A good read if you are intrested in the hellish battle that took place there.

Thanks for the nice replies on these pictures. They had been put away for awhile. I have pictures from Tinian also, if I can find the box they are in I will post them. I was there and in Gaum in 1984. We supported the grunts on Tinian and marched in the 40th anniversary of the liberation of Gaum. It was great! Duane

Nice pics and tour , thanks! It looks as if the island is not as volcanically active as it was during the war. Is this true? Seemed from footage and vet descriptions that it reeked of sulphur everywhere and hot gasses were springing out of the sand on the beach and that the sand was extremely hot because of it. has it calmed down?
                              Best, Sal

Great tour. Thanks for the pics! Is there a single tree anywhere on the island? What is that UFO in post 14?!
