Hi Richard, I don't remember any trees there, but it has been 16 years since I was there. I have no clue about the UFO in post 14. Probably something on the lens.
Hi Sal, yes there is gas or steam comming up from the ground. Posts 9 and 23. Iwo very much smells of sulfer. The sand was warm around the one closest to the beach, and the caves I went in were extremely hot. Duane

            Duane.
That is hallowed ground, for sure. Everywhere you stepped was spilled the blood of your fellow Marines. must have been quite the humbling experience......
            Thanks for your service !!!

Hello Yancy, I was there in 1990 for a Battalion Officer and SNCO PME. (Professional Military Education) We flew in from Okinawa on a C130 and were there for three days and two nights. You could go anywhere and go into anything that was open or that you could find. The concrete bunkers or pillboxes were on top of Mount Suribachi in my photos. Nothing in them. The big bunker with the live ordinance was locked up although we could look inside from the side. The medical tunnel had a lot of stuff in it but we left it there for honors sake. There was a dump that had gas masks and other stuff in it but left it there as there wasn't any room in the ass pack to carry much. We did go into what was marked General Kuribayashis command cave, it was pitch black and our last day. There wasn't anything to see in there. Anyway, most tours over there are only a day long and there is so much to see. If you go plan out what you want to see and do. Three days wasn't long enough for me. As far as relics go, some caves and bunkers have machine guns rusted away in them, but I only saw helmets and small arms in their little museum which was in the big bunker by the air field. I'm sure if you searched hard enough you might find some and some items you don't want to find. Well I rambled on long enough you all can wake up now. Duane
