Hi Guys, yesterday Lez and I attended Mike's funeral. The weather was fine, but very cold.

Mike had a tremendous send off. The chapel was was packed and there was standing room only. There were five standard bearers in attendance from different branches of the Airborne Forces association. Red berets abounded. A large photo of Mike wearing his medals was placed at the foot of the coffin. The service was a true celebration of Mike's life. The airborne Prayer was read out, which I would like to add here:


May the defence of the Most High be above and beneath, around and within us, in our going out and in our coming in, in our rising up and in our going down all our days and all our nights, until the dawn when the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in his wings for the people of the world. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

I passed on everyones thoughts and condolences to Mike's Sons and Daughter.

I'm pretty sure this is your late friend Mike Compton. This was taken outside the Zuid Ginkel Restaurant, on the edge of Ginkel Heath in 2004. 60th anniversary. I was having a beer and takin pictures. I didn't know your friend. He was an impressive looking bloke so I took a picture. A typical tourist thing to do.
I heard that during the war, the restaurant was an SS HQ which soon became an Britsh HQ on the afternoon of the airborne landings.

had the pleasure of meeting him once at beltring and i can say he was an upright honest caring guy.although he didn't like to talk about his war experience he did tell the odd story.
i for one will raise my glass to him later on today.our country has now lost another hero
i make a point of walking round shopping centers on the run up to nov 11 and talking to these guys.they will not be with us for ever.

This is an old thread guys, from 2006. But thank you for your kind wishes.

I was with Mike's son and his old comrades at the weekend at their annual Re-union. I had a great time.

It's said that no good man is ever really gone if we keep him in our memories. How absolutely perfect that Mike's life is now a part of my memory, as well as hundreds more of us here. Thanks for sharing his life and your friendship with us.

I never met him, but I'll certainly never forget him.....
