    ATF Texled smocks

What is the opinion of the current ATF "texled" smocks these days? How do they stack up against SMW? Will they age better than they look new?
    Thanks,
    CB

I have a number of both and to be honest I prefer the ATF smocks. I have been wearing an M42 polyspot for coming on 3 months, for approximately 1 1/2 plus hours a day, whilst dog walking, working outside, to establish wear patterns. It's sad but interesting to see how a garment ages, obviously it's not original material but they are water proof and hard wearing and when aged look quite good. In my opinion and bearing in mind they are only repro's, the ATF camo patterns are a better copy of the originals.

I couldn't afford to and wouldn't if I could, buy original SS camo but I wanted a series of smocks that represent the differing patterns used by the SS to add some interest to an unheated area of my man cave. As new they are too new but after some wear they look much better, the question was how much wear is just right. That's when I got interested in studying the wear patterns of the varying models to see how they correspond to original items posted on WAF. I know, very sad but a mans got to have a hobby.

Thanks, I am in the same boat! Could never afford originals and can only hope to have the better runs of the repros.
SMW smocks vary in that some are better than others, but I was intrigued by the ATF offerings. At least they are trying to get the look by mixed bits in the construction and somewhat sloppy sewing.

I think that you will be pleased with them if you buy one.

Come on Owen, these guys are trying to have an honest discussion. Instead of wise ass remarks about them how about adding something useful to the conversation?

Really. Few of us can afford the real thing, yet are just as fascinated by this subject as any other collector.
I must say I have learned more from Owen and his presentations on SS camo than anyone else and they are constant reference for me.
Repros will always be nothing other than that, but there are some very decent efforts in camo out there for those of us who have no other option.
A little honest feedback would certainly be appreciated!

Come on then Owen add some informative information to the discussion rather than the usual wise cracks. You have done some very good camo threads but in reality all you show are pictures, try adding some detail or in reality is that beyond you. These are repro's full stop but as you answered to my question regarding his repro Oak leaf set in the Beavor thread, he just liked camo, so why can't the rest of us just like camo.

Pictures tell a thousand words and you as an artist should personally understand that concept 100%
Why not help this thread by taking the time to post pictures of the various types to illustrate your points showing different manufacturers wear patterns and prints ?

I agree to a certain extent but anyone can post pictures of items that are considered to be original, the real skill is being able to explain why and what to look for, how the item was constructed and then ideally reference that to the best example of a reproduction on the market for comparison, that's the true test of an expert.

With my project I have to be able to evaluate a picture and then make a decision based on that picture or pictures as to how the component was manufactured and how it should function. If I were to just rely on the pictures alone I wouldn't have got as far as I have. To remanufacture an item you have to reverse engineer an item in your mind and then be able to explain, even if it is to yourself, how it works and if asked be able to explain that to someone else.

My little personal obsession with wear has been going on for several years, it started with caps and has progressed and who knows one day I might start a thread on it but at the moment my time is taken up seeing that my mother, who died on Monday, gets a good funeral.

Waiting on the report on the repos then.
                      Should be fun.

                        Anybody could do it though.
                        By your reckoning.
Maybe someone else could get the ball rolling.

Lets have some Camo love here folks. I would be very interested to learn what Owen and others think of some of the camo efforts out there, both current and past.
While taking repro as a matter of course, surely there must be some that they feel are decent tries. What are they?!
