I "collect" soldiers story but one of the hardest stories to rebuild it was that of my father in law (for respect og his and my wife privacy use only his name, Ennio, and I deleted his surname from the documents below) for a ensamble of reasons
common many young Italians they did after the Italian Armistice his own choice.
Ennio, born in 1923, undergraduate, strongly Catholic family (his brother will be a missionary in Africa) countryside of Modena, he was enlisted at the end of 1943 in the newly army of Italian Social Republic, but immediately after volunteered in X Mas , that attracts many young people in that moment of confusion and difficult choices, to the charm and the simple rules of Commanders Junio Valerio Borghese hero Torpedoes running slow: not with the King alled with the enemy, not with Mussolini for its political failure (it is forbidden to the X Mas soldiers of Borghese enrollment in the new Fascist Party) the X Mas d continues the war with a new and stronger alliance with the Germans.
Ennio enters the "Battaglione Lupo" of the X Mas in april 1944, sergeant, cadet, he fights sul Senio River , and wad captured by the British at the end of the war, , POW in Coltano (Tuscany), and finally released (through the good offices of the family) in late summer 1945, and sent immediatelly (to finish his studies) away from Modena, and Emilia, where after the war the communist partisans, hey had not yet laid down their weapons, and they were "very dangerous" not just for the "fascist" but for all their political opponents.
The reconstruction ofhis military service, is incomplete and difficult because after Ennio war left behind if everything of this experience, does not adhere to the association of veterans, has not kept anything (your photos, documents, and the few objects at the bottom, were preserved by his sister that gave my wife shortly before his death). Ennio , after the war, will have a brilliant and important career as a teacher of literature, headmaster and university professor in various schools first in Italy, then in Somalia, and in Argentina, where he died of a heart attack in 1972 (my wife was only 10 years old at the time), so I I've never known. Finally in Italy nothing Wast or Volksbund for soldiers of the X-Mas!!! the archival documents are kept at the Navy Command in La Spezia also kept secret also to the family.
Only two last things, the name that I chose for my son (now turns 18!) is that of his grandfather: Ennio! and the name of my wife, her first daughter, is Valeria, the same name of his Commander.......
and I begin with what has survived of his military service thanks to his sister....one (the only picture of him in uniform) photo taken in turin, probably summer of 1944 after his enlistment ..
