You may want to consider conducting a WAF site search oiling knife blades. This topic has been discussed many times over the past several years(there was a nother posting a few days ago).
For any military, or other collector blades it is not recommended to use on any type of oil on any blades. Oil attracts dirt, moisture and seals any finger prints left behind on that blade.
Renaissance Wax is a safe wax that is recommended by many museums and collectors world wide on blades. Just a warning a tiny bit of Renaissance goes a long ways.
Please do not store your blades in any knife sheaths.

If oil did all these things .The military would not use it on guns.

This is not the same cause for something that being used over and over oil is okay. For the long haul not using an weapon is a different thing.
The military is not into conservation of many of there items, or preserving the history. Unless it is in one of there military museums.
If one of there guns get rust they can swap it out for another.... If you check out the few military museums. They do use Ren Wax.

Of course these are your items to do with as you see fit...

Do you think they might be interested in conserving the life of the rifle's owner?
