While we're looking at swords, here's one made to hang on the wall for my Holler #21:

Here's one I'm just finishing up. No glass or finish on this one yet. KM visor, brocade belt & buckle, and dagger.

        View from the top:

Mahogany with brass screws in keeping with the nautical theme.

I plan to add a 1914 EK-I, 1914 EK-II, and a WWI sub badge, as the hat is attributed to a WWI U-boat commander who later served in the Kriegsmarine.

        Thanks for looking!

Skip - Nice set of display cases you made and much appreciated in taking the time to post them. I would be interested if you can follow up with a photo of the the Kriegsmarine display case when you complete it. Thanks...

            Thanks Ralph,

Will definitely update the thread with a shot of the finished display as soon as the glass comes in.

On to another display. This time a dagger and visor hat. The hat stand makes use of a wooden hat stretcher, the design for which has been around for over a hundred years. The great thing about it is that it supports the hat by the sweatband - exactly the way is was in wear.

Thanks again to all for looking!

Skip - The background you are using for your collection for sure adds to the display value.

Educate me question for you. The background material you use, is there a need to be concerned of it being against your collection in the long run? Or are you using special material? Thanks...

                Excellent question Ralph.

The material used is acid-free picture framing matboard, so there is no threat.

                  display cases

Skip...a very impressive group of cases. Have you ever tackled the problem of displaying large flags? I have some but am at a loss as to how to properly show them. Any suggestions?

                    Bob,

You're right - the larger flags do present a unique problem on a several fronts:
                    • The space required to display them
                    • The weight of the display itself - especially if glass is used to protect the flag
                    • The expense of the glass if large pieces are used
                    • The relative difficulty of accessing the display
                    • Difficulty associated with shipping/transporting the finished display if the work is done 'off-site'
For those reasons, I have had very few serious requests for flag displays. The occasions where a flag was worked into one of my displays, it was folded or loosely crumpled up and used in the bottom of the case.

Sadly, this is one of the very few areas where I can't be of much help

                    Best,

Skip do you have any examples of smaller flags cases you have done if any? I happen to have a very nice Luft one which needs a protective case?

Additionally - besides the acid free backing do you also use UV protective glass?

                      Regards,

                      John

Sorry John, no photos of any flag displays to post. I can only recall doing one - it was for an SS trumpet banner.

Yes, I have used the preservation glass on medal displays before.

                          Great pennant, BTW!

                            Shadowbox Dispaly Case

This is a 15x12x2 shadowbox display case. That was bought at a hobby store called Michael’s. The back board detaches from the frame and pieces where attached by punching small holes through the backing then using a thin gage wire to attached to the board. In case you are wondering, the dagger is in the sheath because the blade is messed-up.

                            Best,
                            John

Sorry to be so long getting this done, but here is the finished product, sans the WWI U-Boat badge (an item high on my MAX Show shopping list):
