Hi Guy's,
Normally, i am a firm believer in the "leave it alone" policy, however, this came my way today and i just couldnt help myself, Initially i thought this was a WW2 combat knife but after a little quick researching i think i've got myself a Bavarian WW1 Trench knife, i understand the crown over the letter "L" indicates King Ludwig of Bavaria 1913-1918 ( please correct me if i am wrong ).
anyway, somebody in their wisdom had decided that this would look better with a coat of silver paint why, i can't imagine, it was evident that whoever had done this had not (fortunatley) prepared the surfaces for painting and had simply slapped it on, I used a water based paint stripper to get the paint off, and in an effort to try to preserve as much of the patina as possible I was very careful not to rub too hard when doing so, i just used a soft sponge and took my time, when i was finished i just oiled the blade, treated the scabbard hanger with neatsfoot oil, and used danish oil on the wooden grips, i think it was an hour well spent what do you guy's think?
Regards.
