    WW1 Trench Knife

    Hi Guy's,
Normally, i am a firm believer in the "leave it alone" policy, however, this came my way today and i just couldnt help myself, Initially i thought this was a WW2 combat knife but after a little quick researching i think i've got myself a Bavarian WW1 Trench knife, i understand the crown over the letter "L" indicates King Ludwig of Bavaria 1913-1918 ( please correct me if i am wrong ).
anyway, somebody in their wisdom had decided that this would look better with a coat of silver paint why, i can't imagine, it was evident that whoever had done this had not (fortunatley) prepared the surfaces for painting and had simply slapped it on, I used a water based paint stripper to get the paint off, and in an effort to try to preserve as much of the patina as possible I was very careful not to rub too hard when doing so, i just used a soft sponge and took my time, when i was finished i just oiled the blade, treated the scabbard hanger with neatsfoot oil, and used danish oil on the wooden grips, i think it was an hour well spent what do you guy's think?
    Regards.
    Col.

Thank you Guy's for your replies to this,
Imperial stuff is an unknown entity to me, but looking again at this, and learning as i go, i wonder, could it be an "O" indicating King Otto, rather than an "L" for King Ludwig like i thought at first?....this would make this knife pre-WW1. ????????Help!!
                Regards.

                      Very nice.

I have a different WW1 trench knife (Boker?) with the same "proof" mark.
Never found out what it means.
