    SS Insignia Collection

    Hi all,

I’ve been collecting on and off since 2015, and I finally got around to buying a few oak cases with foam backing to display my collection hanging on a wall. Prior to that, it was all stored in a fire resistant safety box, and I would only take out a few items from time to time to admire. Over the years I came to feel that method of storage, while perhaps being the safest, has the disadvantage of forgoing part of the enjoyment of collecting.

These photos are taken with the cases open to prevent glare.

The below represents about 80% of my current collection, the remainder being more miscellaneous items. I am still in the process of slowly expanding the collection but felt the time was right to share with you all.

I hope you enjoy, and I welcome any feedback.

Uneducated question why does one eagle face the opposite direction? Also the same question on the skulls?

            Sorry for the dumb questions........

As the saying goes, no question is a dumb question, except perhaps for the unasked one! Especially when dealing with an esoteric subject like this.

I should preface my answer by mentioning that I am not nearly as expert as some of the esteemed members here, so I hope that it is accurate and relatively free from blunders.

In my understanding, the eagle that faces to the left is a so-called “first pattern” SS eagle, which as the name implies was an early version that differed in both shape as well as direction as you noticed.

As for the skull tabs, the left-facing one, referred to as a “vertical TK tab”, was also an early version associated more with the SS-TV than the Waffen-SS Totenkopf Division, as opposed to the horizontal tabs - Although the vertical tab would also have been used by early Totenkopf Division members as a badge of distinction to identify themselves as being among the original cadre which carried over from the SS-TV, similar to the skull cuff title in the middle. It should also be noted that there were sometimes right-facing vertical tabs and left-facing horizontal tabs, in cases where the TK tabs were worn on both sides of the collar.

                          My pleasure -

This is the very same badge featured on pages 67-72 of Antonio Scapini’s “The Anti-Partisan Badge” (note the identical chip on the serpent’s tail covering the sword blade).
