First and second Indochina wars....a work in progress.

    Hello all,

The following images stem from me meeting a French re-enactment group who had travelled over to the UK's largest Militaria/living history event that is held once a year a couple of years ago.

At first i had no idea what they were recreating, as the French military of the time used almost anything to arm and clothe it's troops, which lead to a very eclectic look to it's troops who were wearing a curious mix of French, British and US uniforms and equipment.

After conversations with my new found French friends, i found i was hooked on the period and began to collect what i could as a sideline to my main collecting interests.

This interest eventually lead onto another associated field, the later US involvement.

As a result, the collection is neither as definitive or as complete as i would like it to be....but i hope it will continue to grow.

This first set of images is really a re-shot compilation of items that were shown a few years ago. So apologies for the few who have seen them before!

To start we have an infantryman dressed in the standard lightweight combat fatigues, called "trellis de combat Mle 1947".

He also has a French shirt, US helmet, and some US webbing.

The US chute silk was a popular affectation and was worn as a scarf type garment.

              Footwear.

Once again a huge variety of footwear was used by French forces in Indochina. US boots were particularly popular...but my favourite are these canvas and rubber tropical "patauga" boots.

Here is an example of the type of official government stampings that can be encountered in these garments.

                These are dated 1952.

Although many peoples first thought of Indochina generally revolves around the Foreign Legion contingents, possibly the finest troops deployed were the Army para regiments.

For many (myself included) the classic image of the later years of the conflict are these troops.

                    Another angle.

We have a French para jacket, pistol belt and beret with a little US webbing.

Note the method of wearing the beret. And note too the colour. Both would greatly influence S.Vietnamese airborne units in the Second Indochina war.

A very popular item of clothing with French units was tthe British "windproof" smock and trousers.

This cool lightweight fabric was highly prized, and often modified by moving the pocket to the side of the leg and adding a zipper fly.

This camo pattern was the direct influence for the later S.Vietnamese "pink" pattern camo favoured by their airborne units (and also worn by US advisors too).

Another pair of standard British windproofs.

Unissued and having a vibrant colour.

Displayed on the above trousers are some bits and pieces.

Including a set of "Ranger" French paratroop boots (1952 dated).
