    P/b collection display

    Gentlemen,

sorry to bother you again ....

I've tried to rearrange and implement some of your most appreciated comments !

I've tried to arrange the display by 'recce' / 'fighters' / 'bombers' ...

"Tannenberg" had been the only 'unit' (Gruppe !) entitled to wear a CT..

in this case though not a 'Geschwader CT' ...

it was 'Aufklaerungsgruppe 10' / home base : Neuhausen b. Koenigsberg

"They" chose 'Tannenberg' because the victory of 'Tannenberg' (1914/15) had

been credited (to a certain extend) to essential information provided by recce

    units !

I placed the 'night fighter (gold) clasp' on the picture showing a 'Lancaster'

together with the relevant "Abschussbecher" of Hptm Baer ....

The manual " Des Jaegers Schiessfibel " is a late war 'shooting instruction

    manual' authorised by Galland ...

pleas be so kind and comment !

    Thank you

    Wolf

I look at a display like Wolf’s and see some 50 or so badges and am taken back with how impressive and splendid an array such as this is. I ponder the market value (investment) that this represents and I’m astounded. I feel rather inadequate where my habit has been to grab a good example of something that interests me, like a Pilot Badge (in my case a boxed Juncker) and upgrade the example as funds or opportunity presents itself. Where I consider myself, in a small way, a collector of insignia, I’ve acquired an example set of each Luftwaffe General rank I could lay my hands on but, while I would always consider upgrading to a better set I’ve never gone out of my way to hold on to multiple sets of, say, the same rank’s collar tabs.

I’m wondering (and please don’t take any offense by my question because none is intended) why collectors are driven to acquire ten, twenty or more examples of a particular badge type which I assume are examples of all the manufacturers making them? I’ve always pondered this because in my case I’ll admit that I’ve dreamed (were I ever to win Powerball) about having a nice example of say, every Luftwaffe qualification badge - a ‘set’ if you will - that would represent most of what Luftwaffe personel may have worn on their tunics but never contemplated an array such as that presented. My mindset has always been find the best example of something you can afford and move on until you can upgrade.

That said, it’s very hard to not be overwhelmed by an auspicious display such as Wolf’s shown us here. It is, as I’ve said, spectacular!

            What 'drives' you Wolf?

              p/o - p/b badges

              Dear collector friends,

please don't get me wrong !

Rick, please don't get me wrong either !!!!!!!!!

I have bought badges in the past which I do not consider any longer

to be part of my collection !

My intention is - as you mentioned - to just keep one of each !

              Please allow for changes ...

I do not intend to display / collect more than one of a kind !

Most of the badges are of a different kind ... no ?

If the market allows ... I will try to change !!

              Best regards

              Wolf

No worries, sir, and don't let "them" discourage you as you've committed no crime. Why some collectors are concerned with what others collect is beyond me. And then to appear openly jealous because you have many of what they can't afford...well, it's not our fault some have a higher paying career than others, such is life.
I say if you want to buy every example for a particular award in existence, do it, it's your money, not theirs. I see this all the time now of these places, and comments of such, not unlike the one above yours; I know you said no offense, but that doesn't stop it from being offensive or blatantly wrong, are the reason why so many no longer post their collections. Many have become fearful of being criticized, just like this, for several of reasons. It's a shame we've come to this as sharing/viewing collections is in my opinion one of the best contributions these forums have to offer.
Anyways, you own a wonderful collection, thank you for posting.
Add: I am just using this thread as an example. Nobody here has necessarily deliberately been rude or jealous-like.

My observation is that there are basically two types of collectors:
                  • Those who can recognize and appreciate the differences (design differences, hardware differences, material differences) between makers of the same award, and between early and late models by the same maker;
                  • Those who can't recognize, or don't care about, such differences.

The former type, usually younger or weaned on the forums, tends to be interested in collecting these variants, and the latter does not. The former type of collector tends to be interested in the timelines of production, the wear of dies, the aesthetic trends of certain times or geographic areas of the country, etc: real wonk stuff. To the former type of collector, "that stuff all looks the same," and he wants one fine example of each type of award.

I think it's just different interests; a different collecting ethos I suppose.

Christ, I’ve been turned into “them”…?

I was simply interested in the fascination folks have with collecting the various makers of the same badge rather than any “concern” over what he collects what so ever. Wolf has a wonderful collection and I wasn’t impugning it - I was honestly interested in Wolf’s thoughts on completing such an array versus a different mind-set (mine) which I shared. What’s “offensive or blatantly wrong” about asking someone a simple question about what motivates a collector in the direction he’s taken? It’s no different than asking why someone collects field gear or firearms.

As for the drivel about my being driven by some envy or suffering from career driven lack of means, I can assure you that don’t live under a bridge nor do I carry an EBT card. Some of my collection is posted here in this forum too and I would happily respond to a fellow collector asking why I’ve focused on the subject matter I’ve focused on.

So, I apologize (to Wolf) if I offended him.

                      .....

Ahhh.... don't worry about it. Every day at least one time or other you will offened
someone. If people always thought about offending someone then no one would
                      ever open there mouth.
It's easy to offened people especially on a forum like this where you don't
know how the persons voice sounds to understand there true meaning.
So go ahead speak up and ask, and offend.
I think a lot of people like to be offended, it gives them a reason to open there mouth.
And to all those who are offened, .
                      Oops.. I hope I didn't offened anyone.
