    Mannequin #22: The Segeltuchtasche 15

The Gummi Gas Mask Model 15 (Gummimaske) respirators were introduced during 1915. Initially, the mask was supplied without a bag or metal can and was stored away in the bread bag or in cans fabricated in the field. Later in 1915, special bags were distributed for the Gummimaske. These grey cloth bags (Segeltuchtasche 15) had three compartments. The mask was stored in a tin can and put inside the canvas bag. A spare filter was stored in a smaller can and positioned next to the gas mask can and the third compartment contained another filter as well. The canvas bag had two canvas belt loops at the back and was worn at the hip.

Both ends of the bag are stamped in black ink with the number 1,2 or 3, corresponding to the three sizes of gas masks.

The below photo illustrates a rare first model cloth carrier (the cloth strap is buttoned behind the belt) with Gummi gas mask attached onto the belt.

      Mannequin #23: The Bereitschaftsbüchsen (1917)

Due to material shortages and the poor protection of the Gummimaske against certain substances like lachrymatory, a new mask with a different design was introduced in June 1917, the "Ledermaske 17", "Lederschutzmaske" or "Gasmaske 17".
The can to store this Lederschutzmaske (called Bereitschaftsbüchsen) was 0.8" (2cm) higher than the can for the 1915 Gummimask. In addition, the 1917 can contained a small compartment in the lid for a spare set of lenses, and an instruction sheet at the bottom explaining how to use the gas mask. Apart from metal, Ersatz materials like wood were used as well in the production of gas mask cans.

The next impression, using a somewhat bathered overcoat, but its still presently very nicely I think.

Mannequin #24 : The Model 1911 Wire Cutter (Grosse Drahtschere)

The 1911 model wire cutter was 19.7" (50cm) long and had wooden grips. It was initially supplied without a carrying case, instead being inserted behind the soldier’s belt or slipped inside a T-shaped metal clip that was worn on the belt. In some cases, soldiers are seen on period photographs, wearing the wire cutters slung around the neck.

This infantry soldier mannequin is wearing a Model 1915 field-grey overcoat (Mantel) armed with a Gewehr 98 and equipped with brown leather Model 1909 ammunition pouches, a leather gas mask Model 1917 in can, and wire-cutter at the ready.

                  Superb

What a great display of vintage (almost 100 yrs old) uniforms and
Equipment from an era that doesn't get as much publicity as the TR age.

Mannequin #25 : 3rd Chevauleger trooper with leather Gasmask

This Third Bavarian Cavalry Chevauleger trooper wears Model 1909 Waffenrock and leather gas mask. The can is marked with the size number "1".

The photo must ‘date’ from after the introduction of the steel helmet in 1916, as this man has swapped his spiked helmet (Pickelhaube) for more adequate protection. The cavalryman is still wearing his cavalry belt and ammunition pouches. Most cavalry unit at the Western front fought dismounted in the trenches after 1914.

yes, I do like these Bavarian Chevauleger tunics a lot. A subtle difference with the Uhlan pieces. This one is an issue piece with Bekleidungsambt markings. The best tunic in my collection I think.

Mannequin #26: Kraftfahrer with Gas Mask

A Kraftfahrer ('driver') representation wears a Model 1915 overcoat and leather cap, and carries a special airplane pilot/Kraftfahrer gas mask. Such a gas mask was worn with separate goggles and had a mouth piece (similar to that of the Dräger Tubben), rubber hose and a nose clip. The double white Litzen for Kraftfahrer on the overcoat were discontinued when the Model 1915 uniform regulations were announced

Close-up view of the gas mask's special rubber hose that connects the mouth piece to the filter. The canister is especially tall compared to the normal Model 1916 metal gas mask can.
