    Marble desk set with eagle

Interesting piece here. Must have belonged to someone fairly important. Inkwell measures about 12 1/2 inches X 7 1/2 inches. The paperweight measures about 2 1/2 inches X 3 inches. Wingspan of eagle is about 6 1/2 inches.

          looks like a replacement hinge
but yes, very easy to 'upgrade' to 'nazi'...
          regards

Interesting comments, Niblet and Jon. Does the matching marble paperweight and eagle look like an "upgrade" also. Critical comments are welcome, but let's talk specifics about your reasoning and not just voice opinions. Thank you -

Well,,lets discuss it then,,,look at the piece,,its crude workmanship,,
If I was a nazi officer would I want this godawful thing on my desk?

Bettter yet who would have the balls to give something like this to a high ranking party member

the piano hinge? it looks like the one on the bathroom door at my parents house.
the eagle,,,lacking details,,and that finish?? oh my

I dont mean to be mean here friend,,just making an observation,,I have been wrong before

                Niblet -

"CRUDE WORKMANSHIP"??? Amazing!!! This desk set has been looked at and handled by several very experienced collectors who had nothing but good words to say about it. Perhaps its time to change the prescription for your glasses, Niblet. No further comments from you are necessary.

Niblet just gave his honest opinion. That is what was asked. Now there may be a chance that it could be real, but it looks an awful lot like things I've seen for sale in Afghanistan.

                      Guys,
We need to be prepared for an opinion that we don't like when we post items here.
Good or bad. We post items with the expectation they are real, but we may also be bias towards it because we spent the money, but other members can judge it without prejudice, and sometimes what we hear is harsh. I would rather hear the truth no matter how bad it hurts than to go on being ignorant of what I actually have.
Just my two cents on this.

When I first saw this piece I thought that the hinge was perhaps a cabinet hardware replacement. However; Note that the bottom hinge leaf is apparentely thicker that the top hinge leaf which would not be characteristic of a cabinet hinge and I'm stating this as a long time amateur cabinet maker.
Contrary to some of the comments above I think the piece is reasonably well crafted. Whether it's period or not is anyones guess as is the case with many decorative 3rd Reich pieces .

The inkwell itself does look period to me and the marble base for eagle does match inkwell marble. Hence I feel did come together (not saying when). Are there any maker marks on bottom? Out of possibly hundreds of makers of inkwell sets in Germany of varying quality I don't find it too far fetched that it could be period. I think we are all so gun shy of fakers (and rightly so) we tend to claim anything not textbook as fake or at least fake until proven original

But only the Eagle and HK...broken. My Eeagle looks older.

With these photo's I don't really think anyone can judge weather it's period or not ( although I do have to agree that the hinge is hideous)....... I honestly think better and detailed photo's are going to be needed.
