It's coming along nicely, how heavy is it right now and what is your plan on installing the glass? Will it be a 4'x6' sheet or will it be sectioned and framed to match the dividers already in place? Just curious how heavy this will become.
The weight would cost a ton to ship anywhere, which is the reason we don't make these unless it is made on sight.
All in all it's looking great, can't wait to see it finished.

p.s. Please tell me your not staining it. Oak is so beautiful with it's natural
      color.

        Thanks!

Right now it is fairly light...20lbs maybe. All there is too it is 2 1/2 x 3/4" frame and a sheet of 3/16 spruce plywood. With the glass...whew, I'm guessing it's going to be in the 100lb mark when all said and done. that's not too bad, I will be able to lift it on and off the wall myself without any major problem. I will never sell it or ship it, so those thoughts weren't in the decision making process.

I *hope* to go with 6 mil glass in one sheet. going to talk to my glass guy tomorrow about it. I don't see a problem as I have built similar sized cabinets with larger pieces of glass. the more unobstructed view I can have, the better. IMO

LOL the stain debate. Well I am like you and love nothing better than the colour of natural red oak!! The humidity here is so low that hard woods really dry out if they are left around. I like to use a coat of #209 Minwax natural stain for that reason. It adds some moisture to the wood. Otherwise I find myself putting on 5 or 6 coats of clear coat because the wood just sucks it up.

They will end up coming out the colour, depending on the wood colour, as the center part of these doors, not as yellow as the 1/4 plywood yellows more than the natural hardwood..

That was fun staining them ...NEVER let your wife in on building things, they find a way to make it WAY harder than you figured LOL!!

I just redid my doors and left the cabinets. This is how they turned out, pretty happy . Did it all from the rough oak to the glass. Still have the sunshine ceiling to go.

            Hey, Lee

I see that now you are going as fast as a rocket! I'm glad of that! Creative work is always helping to clear the mind.

If you are doing such miracles in your kitchen, I'm sure that the display cabinet will be a VERY nice one

                    Hey Bud,
I got to agree with the others, it's going to be nice, that, I will be willing to bet on, especially seeing the cabinets you have just done.
With regards to the staining, I use the clear coat method of 5 to 6 coats and that gives our cases that "smooth as glass" look because it also "fills in the grain", but I see what you mean with the stain method you are using, it looks no different than that of natural finish. Great job.
Can't wait to see the finished product.
Will you be inlaying any other contrasting wood such as walnut or will it remain oak? Isn't it great when you can make your own cases the way you want them, there are so many different things you can do.
Take care till the next update friend.
                    Dave.

Hey thanks Dave! I always like to experiment with stuff so I think I will try your way off finishing. No stain and plenty of clear coats, thanks!

I'm not going to inlay with this one. I, like others, still have some questions on how this is going to turn out for sure. If it does work I imagine I will try again, a little more intricate though.

I have thought about ordering some 1/4 baltic birch letters and attaching them to the frame over the different areas, like "Heer" "Luftwaffe" etc but I'm still undecided about that.

Haven't had a chance to work on it since the last update. With dad passing and me trying to get my company up and running time is very limited these days.

Just a word of advice to anyone who works in a family business. Sit down one day and talk about everything, how it is set up, who's name is on what, just to make a transition easier. I am sitting on an empty bank account just for the fact I wasn't on anything so all of dad's assets were froze and sent to probate!! End of September is about when it will get released! I know the thought of loosing someone close sucks and talking about it even more so..but do it!

                        Hello Lee,

that's true, but thanks for advices anyway. Normally we don't think about simple things, but someday it may get revenge on us

Btw, I wish you all the best for your company, funds... and at third place your display project of course

Well I have made no head way in my building

But here is what I have so far. Not very focused or big but I guess I have what I have

My picture/papers collection, sorry I like the "dark" side of pictures

                                Hello Lee,

nice to see that your collecting interests are still alive

Maybe you don't have many stuff, as you said... but those what I can see on this pics are very nice looking ones
I hope that you'll build your display cabinet soon!
