    Introduction

    Hello

New to the forum and thought it would be proper conduct to introduce myself a bit. My name is Bastiaan (from the name Sebastian) and only recently started collecting on a small scale in the German WW2 memorabilia field. I have collected militaria as boy but just various bits and bobs of no real value.

My interest in German WW2 items originates from the fact that both my great grand father and grandfather served in the war on the German side.

My great grandfather in WW1 and WW2 where he received the iron cross second class and the standard frontline combatant medal.

And my late grandfather served in the panzer devision he fought at Stalingrad where he lost 3 toes due to frostbite. From the little info I was able to gather it seems to be the 4th panzer devision but I am not sure.

my grandfather on the Dutch side fought in WW2 as well apparently he joined the German side and at some point escaped a camp with a german captain but the family is unwilling to tell me what he did and where. my grandmother says she will tell us when he passes away.

After the weekend I will see if I can get some pictures up of my meagre collection. And will see if I can post the pictures of my great grandfathers medals and picture of him in his luftwaffe feldwebel uniform. I also have a picture of another family member of whom I am not sure what uniform he is in.

Anyway, this site so far has been a treasure trove of information thank you very much.

Translation so the english speakers can understand.

I tried asking my grandfather on my Dutch side once what he did during the war. I asked him if he fought for the Germans and his face turned red and he just nodded yes a bit embarrassed. When I asked him what he did he didn't answer. and that is when my grandmother said she will tell me when he passes away.

It wasn't uncommon for Dutch people to join the German side once they invaded there were Dutch SS members one is on the iron cross stories page on the main website.

This is also probably the reason 80% of his brothers and sisters never talk to him.

A little later than planned but here goes.

I will post 3 pictures of family members in uniform and various meagre bits of bobs ( I said my "collection" was meagre).

The first is the display made by my great grandfather with 2 pictures of him 1 from WW2 and 1 of him as a wee lad in WW1 with his medals. the other picture is of an uncle whom I have no idea what he is and what he did.

Also excuse the quality for the life of me I can not get a good picture out of my crummy camera.

Great grandfather WW2. I think the kragen spiegel indicate a feldwebel but could be wrong

A SS relic ashtray supposedly dug up on a former training ground.

Last cigarette case with a pic of Adolf in I. Don't know if it is period the decorations fit the time. This picture didn't turn out all that great mainly due to the flash which I can't turn of because then all my pictures turn out blurry.

And that is all for now have some more stuff lying around will post more as I get more.
