Getting back to masks for a moment, here are two versions of the Gummimaske.
On the left is a M15 Bandmaske, the second model of Gummimaske first issued around the end of October 1915. On the right is the third model, the M16 Rahmenmaske, first issued either at the start of 1916 or August of that year, depending on the source.
It's immediately obvious that the older model mask was larger and held a larger volume of air. It was reduced in size to make it easier for the wearer to breathe. Both masks are stamped size 2 (medium).Last edited by Hans K.; 07-13-2008, 06:11 PM.Comment

The mask's filter attachment plate was reduced in size from approx. 10 cm in diameter to 8 cm.Comment

The mask was further improved by the addition of an extra set of y-shaped straps to the top of the head and forehead area to fit the mask more securely.Comment

great thread with great close up pics. I never knew there were so many markings on them. I guess thats a no brainer as those Germans were just as anal back then as they were 25 years later.

One of the final improvements made was to sew a strip of cloth around the inside perimeter of the mask to ensure a snugger fit (seen on the mask on the right). This feature is what gave the Rahmenmaske its name. Rahmen means frame in German.Last edited by Hans K.; 07-13-2008, 06:10 PM.Comment

Filters: 11-11S belonging to the M15, left; and 11-11 filter from the M16 Rahmenmaske, right. The 2nd model "Bandmaske" was the first mask to have the filter screwed into the mask's filter plate. The earlier 11-11S filter's threaded insert was left unlaquered. Subsequent 11/11 and later 11-C-11 models would have the threaded part laquered.
Both versions of the 11-11 filters had a third layer of chemicals added to protect agains phosgene. The first 11-11S filters were introduced in February or March of 1916.Comment

The final change to the Gummimaske came in March 1917, when the cloth straps on the Rahmenmaske were improved by changing to cloth covered springs, which strengthend the straps considerably. These same straps would be used on the GM17 leather mask (Lederschutzmaske).Comment

I'm glad you're enjoying the thread Glenn. Actually, not all cans are maker marked, and very few have date or acceptance ink stamps. By the way, have you spotted the can I bought from you yet? I can pick it out in a line up.
here it is on the left. I miss it but I know its in a great home with more of its brothers. plus I love the fur hat I got from you. so its all good. I remember mine (yours) has a nice stamp on the bottom of the cannister and another thing I loved about it was the metal web lenses. those look sinister. 
keep up the great work. I dont think theres a thread this detailed about these on here yet. what an archive this forum has!

love all the info great clear pics also,,,
my camera is not that good but it seems to do well enough.
anyway here are more detailed pics of the inside of the gummi can and
while i was taking out one mask i noticed that i do have a another maker marked can a KRAG marking in bottom .
also some more filter pics and insides of the masks.

inside of the gummi can, has some oil type rements from i guess when there was a mask in it.
other than that does not have the extra bars at bottom?
