I like the discussions on photography ... it's part of the enjoyment of collecting for me.
You are right on the direct sunlight. While the details come out nicely, the colors can wash out and the shadows are no good. But unfortunately, today is sunny and beautiful here in Tennessee, so I had no choice in the matter. I agree with you, overcast would be best.
There are literally tons of options out there on digital cameras. I took a long time to choose one since there are so many choices, but I needed a small size (since I am on the road a lot) and the "macro" capability for badges and such. Be careful out there, some don't have the macro. But again, it depends on use.

P. S. Tony, some day when I get a little smarter, I would love to do a website as you have done with your collection. It is beautiful --- clean and neat which is what I like. So many look so amateurish. Some tips would be nice from you on this as well. Please feel free to PM me and I will give you my coordinates.
