    Slovak

This is the Slovak night-fighter pilot badge. Note it has a gilt eagle with gilt wreath. This particular badge has a pin-back arrangement in the German style. I have also seen these with tabs as well -- more like the Austrian or other Eastern European badges.

      Now moving on ...

Here is a Christmas 1936 plate for 9./Kampgeschwader General Wever 253. It is marked "Porzellan - Mallerei Ophir Bethel" on the back with a logo as well which is a crown over a small "M" inside a wreath.

        Small stuff ...

I asked an advanced Luftwaffe collector one time as to why he collected in this specialty --- and his answer was simple. The endless variety. Here are some small items but which are very enjoyable to collect.

Below is a hat eagle after initial stamping and unfinished. A nice study in how these were made. A Messerschmitt GmbH factory ID tag, as well as one for Dornier, are shown here. I also have a couple of "good luck charms" --- one here shows a pilot with an HE 51 aircraft.

          More ID's ...

Here are more factory ID's and a couple of bullion glider badges (A and B). These ID's are also for the Dornier factory as well as two Focke Wulf factory ID's.

Again, it's the small stuff of almost endless variety that can make Luftwaffe collecting a truly lifetime experience. Not to discourage anyone from this area but you will never tire of it and you are never finished.

I also enjoy NSFK though I have little of it. Here are two interesting documents --- one is a pass to the Haus der Flieger in Berlin. The other is an NSFK Glider "C" Ausweis.

              Miscellaneous grouping

This is largely self-explanatory --- a batch of stuff including steins, cuffbands, and small items.

                Various handbooks

Collecting various printed material from the period is always interesting --- to see the photos, diagrams, maps, and so on. Below are a batch I picked up to include a Luftwaffe songbook, a propaganda pamphlet on the war against England, an air gunner's handbook (quite rare), and a couple of pilot handbooks.

                  Navigation and maps

Since I am a professional pilot and flew in the military for 20 years, the pilot-related material from the Luftwaffe is of particular interest.

Here are two books --- one is a navigation text with full color diagrams on how to use the "Knemeyer" (the circular flight computer) and a bound set of charts that I had not ever seen before. This tabbed book is quite handy to use in a small cockpit. Germany was divided into 4 Zones as far as charting was concerned and this is how the book is organized. You could easily tab to your Zone and then over to the page which covered the terrain you were flying over. Very easy to use.

I have several Knemeyers in my collection and an old ex-Luftwaffe pilot friend of mine showed me how to calculate wind components and I use it even today.

                      More insignia

Here are various sets of summerweight flight suit rank insignia. These are hard to find in matching pairs.

The gold badge at the bottom is for the Bucker factory (umlaut over the "u"). They manufactured the Bestmann, Jungmann, and Jungmeister training aircraft. These were fabulous machines. I had the pleasure of flying an original, German-built Jungmeister powered by its original Siemens engine some years ago. Delightful to the touch and a master at aerobatics. Needless to say, I had to have this pin. Many Jungmann and Jungmeister airplanes are still in the air today --- though sadly, most without original engines. The Spanish also manufactured their own version of the Jungmann with a Tigre engine --- but it's not quite the same. Many were also manufactured in Czechoslovakia and Switzerland.

                        More ..

A small collection of ribbon bars and a cloth Glider Pilot badge ... quite hard to find.

                          Salesman Board

These are often called "salesman boards" --- I am not sure that is exactly what this is or whether it is simply a set of factory samples. But it is an excellent study in various uniform insignia and buttons. Back in the old days, dealers used to cut these boards up to get at the individual items --- thus, they are rare today.

                            Reserve tabs ...

And finally my last photo for a little while --- the batteries are dead in the digital camera and I need to recharge them. A set of reserve flight tabs ...

A set of boards for a weather service officer can also be seen. Still with original price tag.

Great collection! I enjoy seeing the Luftwaffe related items as well as the standard stuff.

                                Cuffbands

I have most of the Luftwaffe cuffbands but these are very difficult to photograph and capture the flavor, details, and feel. However, this early Richtofen is the same one featured in Gordon Williamson's book on cuffbands, which I highly recommend.

Anyone out there with a Tannenberg?
