    Collection of Liberated AH Memorabilia

    Greetings all,

I'm home sick from work today. I had an appointment to go to the VA hospital, but can't get there because of the ice on the roads, so I thought I would take some pictures instead. I'd like to show yall my collection of Adolf Hitler items taken from his homes at the end of the war.

I just recently purchased a display cabinet for everything to go in, so I'm much happier with how it is displayed now.

Anyway, here is an overall shot of that side of the room.

The Hitler cabinet. Its a small collection of items, but each one took quite a bit of time to find and finance.

Large dinner plate (from the same set of china already seen) and a very nice white table cloth, the detail and quality of these linens is impossible to capture in pictures.

Lastly, I couldn't leave out a brick from Berghof. This one came to me from a local veteran who was stationed in Germany after the war and picked this up as a souvenir. The book under the brick is Dr. Griffith's reference book on AH memorabilia.

                        Chris-

                        Very, very impressive.

Can you fill us in more on the crystal and china? Not questioning it - I'd just like to know more about it, it's provenance, if it exists in period photos, etc.

                        Thanks!

                          Rob,

No problem, I'm glad to answer that question. These pieces came from the some of a US Army vet who liberated these items from the Berghof. As provenance, he was able to provide copies of V-Mail letters from his father to his mother in which the vet described his experience entering Hitler's residence as well as the many souvenirs that he took--including an inventory of this china and several crystal gobblets. He then informs his wife that these items are being shipped home. Sadly, all of the gobblets but this one were broken. Also by way of provenance, I was provided with a copy of a local newspaper article from the 1960's in which this veteran (now deceased) was interviewed regarding Hitler's home and in the article, he describes these items that he took--the article also boasted photos of these items.

Further still, I have found two period photos of this china setting in use in the Berghof. Both of these photos appear in Lt. Colonel George Forty's book "Germany At War: In Color" and can be found on page 198.

There is also mention made in Dr. Griffith's book on Hitler Memorabilia that: "The famous Munich firm Nymphenburg, also produced a set (porcelain and crystal) which was found in the Eagle's Nest." The set that you see here in my collection was indeed manufactured by the Nymphenburg company.

I don't suppose that there is any such a thing as 100% provenance, but for Hitler items, I think this set comes pretty close and it satisfies me anyway.

I'm glad you asked about the provenance and glad that I had an answer ready. Nothing more embarrassing I think than to claim something came from Hitler's house and then when asked the reasonable question: "Why do you think so?," the only answer you can give is: "Well, the guy at the flea market told me so!"

                          Best,

                          Chris
