Try this one on: My mother once yelled at me, "Those b---ds killed my brother!!"
I was a little more discreet after that. At least until I moved out.
stevenn has a good point: beauty and craftsmanship can distract a country away from evil.
    Others can be made:
    - All history deserves to be preserved, no matter how bad it was, and perhaps because it was so bad. Many blacks today collect the quasi-racist caricature folk art that was common years ago, and some who have been quoted on the issue make this very point. And in the same vein: Who would think of tearing down Auschwitz? Your EK deserves to be saved because it was there.
    - The kinds of relics I read about and see pix of on this forum are typically on display at military museums. For example, the USAF Museum has swastikas on the tails of German planes, EKs, a bust of Hitler, large metal Nazi eagles, you name it. Is the USAF Nazi? I doubt it. Its collection is uncensored. So you're creating your own small museum, uncensored.
    - If one's interest is World War II in particular, or militaria in general, the point can be made (if necessary) by displaying the '39 EK right next to the Order of the Red Star, the Croix de Guerre, the Purple Heart, etc. etc.
What I get these days is "Why do you care about World War II?" And my answer is "Because World War II was the greatest disaster in the history of mankind."
Just ask my mother, who still cries over her brother, killed in action, Aachen, 1944.

      sigh

In western Canada, where I live,we have a group which goes around buying Nazi memorabilia from antique fairs & shops and then they destroy it .These are the same people who should preserve it as a reminder that ww2 was the greatest disaster as Ruki stated.I had to be careful when I was a kid in what I collected and displayed as my family fought against each other during ww2(mother's side against father's side)and my collection made for lively dicussion. stevenn

My wife dosen't want any "Nazi stuff" where anybody can see it in the house. She's afraid it will offend some people or they won't understand. Some of our friends know I collect, (have to put the word out just in case somebody's relative has something in an attic or garage ), a few are even interested when I share a new purchase with them.

She dosen't really understand why I like collecting it so much.
Maybe it's because her 80+ year old father is a German-Hungarian born Volksdeutch who still thinks Hitler was a great man, who did great things for Germany and it's people and after listening to those types of things growing up shes a bit put off by the whole thing.

Maybe she dosen't understand why I collect, but at least she dosen't try and stop me from collecting it either.

I found out a long time ago though to never tell her how much I spend & what some of these things cost. Once I was telling her about what I spent on an SS dagger & some SS cloth items, boy did that spark some lively debate!

So for now untill we get a bigger place where I can have my own office to display what ever I want, everything is packed up & in boxes.
        Regards,
        Chris

Always interested in buying Ribbon Bars or anything Ribbon Bar related!!

          Out of the closet

I've always wanted to broach this subject on the Forum and am glad somebody did. I'm an emerging outa-the-closet-collector. My wife tolerates it as a hobby and at times is even mildly interested in my latest acquisition. Otherwise evreything is kept in the war room/office with door shut, off limits to guests who want to have a tour of the house, etc... No word is mentioned, one has to be very careful about what you disclose and to whom.

Besides that is the attitude of my parants, all the in-laws, brother etc. You see, here in N. Cal attitudes are over the top on anything conservative, pro-american, republican, and anything gun related, etc. meaning one is considered extreme if you are any of the above. Throw in a little memorbilia/ nazi collecting and hell, all of sudden you're a mad dog, white supremist. It's a lonely collecting world and personal contact is few and far between. About 75% of my collection is from vets and when/if I chose to explain my hobby to anyone it is from this vantage point; I enjoy meeting them and listening to their experiences (which is true).

            sigh

It's pretty bad when we have to hide our collections Ihave a friendwho is an elected official and is at the ministerial level.I have to go and buy his collectables and scout around antique stores for things for him because if anyone found out he collects 3rd reich all hell would break loose in the media and the government would get all sorts of flack.

Fortunately I've never had problems with display Mainly helmets, but also have some medals, badges, army equipment. Friends do not understand me - how can I give so much money for such old trash, also how can I keep it, why don't I sell the things as they are expensice /never!! / - but also they enjoy the things and love to come here and look - a kind of museum! The problem with the people at home is only the room taken - you can find helmets or other "junk" in many places, where can be stored much more "useful" thing Also it is not rare for me to spread things allover the table and the floor /to clean or just enjoy the collections/ and leave after me oil and durt stains

As for swastikas - this is the truth - the victors write the history. Much more people were killed in the name of the red star than in the name of the swastika. The reds nearly brought the world to an nuclear destruction. If a sign must be banned, because has caused deaths and suffer - it must be the red star and the other commie symbols at first place! But first of all I am against restricting any kind of symbol from any historical era!
And Ebay - they are idiots and morones!!!! I can not write "SS" there - I need to write "elite" or the ridiculous "XX" But no matter what I write - SS, XX or elite or whatever - you will know what I am talking about. So they must either ban the listing of any item of the period, or let the symbols be normally written/shown. They are bloody idiots! As if not mentioning Hitler or SS will change the fact of their historical existence! I have written all this - and much more to Ebay - several times. Of course, I know this will change nothing. But at least I think of my letters like small forks with which I poke thir fat aXXes
                Hmmmm, Ebay =

Theodore, actually you cannot write any of those either. If you read Ebay's policy on offensive items, it specifically prohibits substituting XX or the such for the purposes of listing an item.

So trying to sell an ek2 on ebay you have to right something like:
This is a XX (ek2) from the XX (third reich) its origianl but the XX (swaz) has been removed

i bet on ebay there would be NO problem selling a gulag commander or gulag camp guard uniform on ebay! life is indeed ironic!
