    1870 ek2 A - Question

    Hi All,

    This is my first ek2 1870 I ever picked up. I already presented it here ;

    Can someone identify the maker by the frame?

        Hi Michel,

        I can only tell it's a very nice Type A core. Congrats. But as for the frame maker...

        I too would like to see what others have to say about this.

          Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think we have been able to identify 1870
          frames by maker yet.

            You weren't and wasn't, but e. g. Trevor does recognize some, from the maker marked 1st classes...

            I wish I learn it some day...

              As Saschaw says, the only possible reference we will ever have is by comparing the frames of the 1870 1st class crosses that are maker marked with the EK2's which are of course always unmarked.

              Of all the era's, the 1870 series is my particular field of interest and while I haven't finished my studies fully yet, I have pretty strong evidence that the same frame was shared by both Wagner and Godet (and quite possibly Lauer/Lemcke as well) - not always, but on occasions.

              I dont want to speak too soon - I need better images before I can post anything definitive, but as a teaser, I'm pretty sure I have already matched your EK2 to the frame of a 1st class 'A type' Wagner and quite bizarrely, a 'B type' Godet frame as well.

              Anyway, whatever I come up with, I think from my point of view it's already shaping up that we will quite probably never be able to make a call on a 2nd class maker due to the sharing by the main players Godet and Wagner of not only the A type core, but (I strongly believe) frames as well.

                    Interesting. This would be news to me, too.

                    I can distinguish the frame used by Wagner for their famous Type A and Type A1 (so-called) EK1s marked "I. Wagner" etc., and one other frame used by Godet on their marked Godet EK1s. Thus my knowledge is fairly limited -- if an EK2 has one of the two frames I recognize as a Wagner or a Godet, I consider it to be a Wagner or a Godet, respectively.

                    I suspect that Wagner used only one frame, and Godet used multiples. So any cross that does not have one of the two frames I can recognize, I consider to be "possibly a Godet, and possibly some other maker."

                    Now, if Marshall is right and makers shared frames as well as cores, then all this supposition is out the window. We shall see.

                        yep ,,,well maybe we can turn this in a real frame analysing thread

                        (something that is over time fore a long time )

                        combining all knowledgeable researches and observations over this
                        and maybe getting somewhere new

                            I think the maker is Godet but I'm not sure. It is not the same frame as the [GODET] EK1 above (which is not mine).
