As a side note, the Meissen factory is still active & producing. Has anybody attempted to reach them, to see if they have any info about the plates?

Unless it was nighttime, or the weather was bad, and you were running out of gas - then it was a sweaty nightmare, like a monkey f*ing a skunk.

Hank, I was there for a day in Jan of this year. I did not ask about the these specific plates, but they told me that every single item made by the factory is catalogued and I think they said they could reproduce a piece, for a price, if you had broken an item from a set no longer in production.

I doubt very much if they would reproduce these plates at any price of course but that only adds to rarity of these specific pieces.

They also told me the factory was not bombed during the war and that immediately after the Soviets arrived, the Soviet police took over the grounds to make sure nobody looted or destroyed the place.

So the files are intact and I guess if you went to the factory and asked, you could find out anything about anything produced there. Naturally, it would take advance work on the part of the investigator, I do not think you could just show up and expect immediate attention to your questions.

I see no reason that they would not respond to a written inquiry though.

WOW ! Those are really great! I only had a Meissen Plate from Legion Condor and one of a Luftwaffen Bau Kompanie... But those you showed here are really outstanding!

It was my understanding that you received the plate if you were an oakleaves holder (as depicted on the plate).
Any idea if he received this after the war from the 10 bought by the German dealer.

Still at a total of 8 for now.

                            John,

Kapitan Merten told me that he received from the WW1 vets after he was awarded the oakleaves, thus my understanding that only oak leaf holders received the plates.

Wondering where it is today as he wanted everything to go the U-Boat Archive, but I noticed his son sent everything off to Hermann Historica to be sold.

Well, even if it went to the Archive, they probably need to sell artifacts to stay open. I do not blame the son either, families have different priorities depending on what is going on with their lives.

Just as happy to see the plates in the hands of collectors.

So we can safely assume his plate was from the 81, not the 10.
