I don't think Pres. Kenedy had a car that was bulletproof in any way, shape or form

So, in YOUR opinion does it display intelligence to build a car with armoured bodywork, floor & bulletproof windows and then...

        ...slap a soft top on? <O</O<!-- / message -->

          Aircraft

          <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1lace>Stirling</st1lace>,
I can't remember all the details on it, but, Hitler did have a special aircraft that he tooled around in. I'm not sure what kind of extra protection was worked into the aircraft, but I'm sure there was some. I believe it ended up in <st1:country-region><st1lace>Spain</st1lace></st1:country-region> at the end of the war...who was on it when it went there is a bit of a mystery! Wasn't there an urban myth that Hitler had a bullet proof lining in one of his hat...could explain the open car scenario? Mind you, it wouldn't have protected him from anyone on the grassy knoll...a Zeppelin shot maybe!
          Cheers,
          James

Yes, Hitler also had his own Aircraft, a JU52 transport made into a luxury aircraft by that times standards. It had increased armor plating as well.

On the subject of the armored car and Kennedy. His vehicle, a Lincoln? did have an armored roof, removable hard top, which he obviously decided against on that fateful day. He was encouraged to use it but declined. The Kennedy assasination was to my knowledge the only time a leader has been killed from a far range sniper shot (lets not debate the number of shooters!)..in all other instances the assassin has attempted to get close to shoot with a revolver, stab, or blow up the leader.

You will note that in nearly all the footage of Hitler in his vehicle on parade the windows are up and he is exposed from the waist up and the vehicle is moving quickly not lumbering on a ticker tape parade. The streets are lined with a military guard and he is doing this early on during the annex parades, Nürnberg rallies, etc..not in occupied Eastern territories. He was a popular leader and wasnt immune to the many attempts on his life despite this.

Please forgive me for working from memory but my memory says his vehicles had bulletproof glass, self sealing tires, and armored plating both to the undercarraige, doors, gas tank, and engine compartment. No doubt they choose to use the 6 wheeled vehicle because it could handle the load. Had Heydrich had this type of protection he might have let loose more blood in the occupied territories.

Hitler's vehicle of choice was the Mercedes-Benz 770 Kw 150 ll according to Peter Hoffman's Hitler's personal security :

              - overall 18 mm armour plating
              - 20-cell tires, ie. multi-chambered tires to prevent deflation
              - 43 mm bulletproof windows
              - aluminium parts to reduce weight
              - 300 l gasoline tank
              - electromagnetic circuit blocking the doors
              - 8 cylinders, 7665 cm3, 400 hp (294kW)
              - max speed 180 km/h

He had at least nine vehicles, all Mercedes. Im mistaken about the six wheels of course although he had these as well.

I'm probably way of touch on this sort of thing, but I thought one of Hitlers cars was at the Paris Motor Museum ? Is it still there ?

                Kind regards,

Hitler also had a customized Mercedes bus

Hitler also had a Mercedes bus that was fit for a Fuehrer. Was it bulletproof? I do not know.

The fact that the origin of the Mercedes-Benz company was with a wealthy stockholder of Jewish descent named Jellinek, apparently, did not bother Hitler or the Nazis a great deal.

                          Hitlers Parade Car

The Bus on the picture is build in 1935 and is a Mercedes Benz LoP 3500, it is called "Konferenz und Salonwagen".
It is a Standard Mercedes-Benz bus , not customized and not bulletproof.
The Diesel-Engine is from the type Daimler-Benz OM 67 , 95 Bhp.and is a 6 Cylinder ( The same engine is in my both LG 3000 trucks, see also the thread on the Forum ).

                          Kind regards Hans

The Hitler Bus I Never Heard Of Before. Did He Ever Actually Ever Use It? I Remember The Staff Car In Canada. As A Kid I Went There And Saw It, That's Been There A Long Time. Remember Reading About Them Maybe Getting Rid Of It Because They Thought It Was To Efensive. I Am Glad To Hear They Still Have It. Would Be Interesting To Know How Many Of Them There Actually Were Made For Him. Regards, Chris

                              Hitlers Parade Car

Hi hereby answering on the thread about Hitlers parade cars and the reactions . The Mercedes-Benz 770 and the three-axle Mercedes-Benz G4 allways cousing a lot of confusion, through the years i,ve become a specialist on these theme and have been more often asked to help solve difficult matters about the Mercedes-Benz cars of the Third Reich.
On the G4 theme and the Armoured Mercedes-Benz cars you can find an thread on the Achtung Panzer Forum.
The decision to develop a new generation Grosser Mercedes was made by Daimler Benz already in 1936, due to the 540 K Lang (long) W 24 project being abandoned. The new model was planned to make its debut by early 1938 .
By May 1937 three cars ( two Offener Tourenwagen and one Pullmann-Limousine) were under construction in the experimental departement, and the officials stressed the fact that as much experience as possible gained from the development of the successful Mercedes Grand Prix cars was drawn upon. More cars were added to the preproduction series in 1937, now comprising eight chassis. In December the decision was made to exhibit one Offener Tourenwagen ( intended for the German Führer ) and one seperate chassis on the Daimler Benz stand at the Berlin International Motor Show during February and March of 1938. A note was made of the fact that the Führer-car would not be completely finished in time , and would have to be returned to the works at once afther the exhibition had closed. Perhabs it would not even be a part of the exhibition for the whole three weeks . The new Grosser Mercedes attracted great attention at the show and the new elegant oval tube chasss was nothing but a sensation. In the years following, this model would be build in many special versions for heads of state around the world and, above all,the bigwigs of the German cabinet. As a result, fantastic yarns have been spun about these Grosser Mercedes cars and these stories found their way into magazines and books, getting more and more incredible with every retelling.
The armoured edition of the Grosser Mercedes W150 came in several versions, causing even more weird tales to be spun. In the 1960s Daimler-Benz issued a specification sheet titled "W 150 II" . This designation was intended for a heavily armoured 400 horsepower car on a shorter wheelbase, weiging a staggering 5,42 tons with a 300litre capacity fuell tank, twin caburettors, a maximum engine speed of 4000 rpm and 180 km/h top speed. Throughout many years of eloborate research of specialists we never come across a single document confirming the manufacture of any such vehicle .A study about twenty surviving W150 cars around the world, none of these showing any devations from the basic W 150 design making it is possible W 150 series II candidate.
The car in Sinsheim Germany is the Grosser Mercedes Offener Tourenwagen ch nr 150006/0009 , there is also an very rare 770 Innenlenker ,One of a series of ten armoured cars ch nr 150006/ 0019.
The 770 in the Canadian War Museum has the Fabriknumber 429334 and Ordernumber 366986 It is ordered by Erich Kemka on 3-11-1939 and delivered
on 8 july 1940 , This car is armoured. The original engine nr 1015000304 was broken down , Sergeant Azara removed the engine from the Mercedes-Benz 770 (order number 399902) at trostberg, some fotry kilometres north-west of Salzburg. The engine number today is 10150050028.

                                James,

I'm American (US), and I love Canadians, and Brits. What Shane said is repeated here in the states almost daily. As far as I'm concerned, they can close the damn borders and give California back to Mexico.

No offense neighbor, but if you honestly think we would be the bitch, you either, 1) Haven't been here in a while, or 2) Have never dealt with the criminal element in this country!!
