i dont like it... rust under the paint

Agree with others.....the canister appears to have been painted after rusting. Possible to have this happen during wartime, but unlikely. Rust pitting of steel takes a long time to happen, so it's highly unlikely that a soldier's cannister could rust-out to that extent and be repainted during to course of his deployment.

Better (close-up) pics would tell more.

To me it seems "restored" with brush strokes in the point with rust, but with original paint in 80% of it.
