To illustrate and help a little bit our dear member francis006 with its two sleeves ink marked, for the frag one Do 4 / 1944 and the smooth one Do 5 / 1943 . No stamped maker mark found:

As a matter of personal curiosity, would anyone have a fragment of a fragmentation ( I hate abbreviations) sleeve?

And be able to take a closeup photograph of the broken face edge of the fragment?

This ragged, broken edge should show the crystal/grain structure of the metal.

From that I can see what is was made of.

Everyone needs a hobby, keeps us off the streets.

I do have a ground dug frag sleeve that lost the paint and shows how the metal should be. I will take some pics and add them tomorrow morning

Somewhere I have a broken British pineapple grenade and will try to get a photograph of the grain/crystal structure of it to compare.

Also there is lurking in a corner of the shop a piece of 'black' iron pipe (actually gray cast iron) that also has a broken end.
And if memory serves me it is about the same size as a fragmentation sleeve.

Could be interesting.

Sorry to have taken so long to get this post up.

I could not find that broken grenade, bl**dy thing has been under foot for years and when I want it, it's nowhere to be found!

Any how I did manage to photograph some cast "black iron" pipe with corrosion and knocked off a bit with a hammer to show the grain of the metal. Very brittle stuff and soft too.

Zeller that macro detail was a big help, that does look the way one would expect gray iron to oxidize.

I was hoping to see the broken face of one like the edge of the pipe in my photos (if they post that is) below.

Is it possible to get some photographs of this sort of breakage?
