    Luftschutz Gasmaske

    Hello gents

Could someone please shed some light on this Luftschutz Gasmaske ? Not very familiar with the design of the mask (especially with the side respirator). Everything is marked 1939, including the spare lenses however the filter is 1943 (weird eh?). No markings on the mask itself or the container like the Heer ones which have a lot of `em. The locking mechanism on the can is unfamiliar also.

If you have some more info please do share.

Thanks a buch and have a great week-end

    Cheers

Very nice Gasmaske 200 style rubber mask. I found one too recently. All examples i have seen so far came from police officers/gendarmerie in the Hannover area. Very clean set! Congrats!

I would really love to see your set too. Any idea to help me out and read the label ? What do you think ...should I clean it with water and soap and restore it a bit or leave it as it is ?

      Cheers

          I read:
          Gend. (Gendamerie) Kreis Le.....

          Kreis=area/district

Here are two better pictures of the cardboard.

The first line reads indeed Gend. Kreis Leonberg and the second one ends with a word "...erg".
The pencil writing : Schule Renningen ? Hard to read the second word after Schule but appears to have R and nn.

For me this is not a Gasmaske 200 but the early version of the GTG, build of the Gasmaske 200 is essentially too different to this one.

The fact that the filter is 1943 dated isn't a problem, filters don't last and can be replaced at some point. These masks were initially made for industrial purposes but were also pushed towards Luftschutz and police divisions. At that time they were often sold or issued with a older type of canister. The fact that the setup is stamped with official eagle stamps means that this one went through the official channels and was not intended for industrial use but for governmental issue.

I beg to differ. This is labeled on the Gasmaske 200 as a Ventilmaske probably 1935 and definately not a GTG.

This was Johannes' website, who I knew personally. He has since passed away unfortunately.

But his website has many errors in designations because he too sometimes had to go on guts feeling or assumptions. Going on the build it's substantially different than the usual Gasmaske 20 and 200 and it has much more similarities with the GTG line of Dräger.

Johannes' website is a good starting point but it's not the definite guide to gas masks. I myself am busy with making my website about my collection (around 450 different gas masks in the collection right now) and it will show the correct designations of certain gas masks that are not correctly named on the website of Johannes. But do understand that gas masks are very murky on terms getting information, there is often little to no information available and some things will forever remain a mystery. You often cannot blame some incorrect things on gas mask websites because it's a very under-researched field in military equipment.

100% agreement. Johannes was a pioneer who discovered a completely unknown collectors territory and did a great work. I knew him too...
But as Filip says his website is full of errors. As an example he thought that dutch reissue german gas mask cans with grey overpaint were german DAK colours.
So i think Filip knows it better in your case. He is more than 30 years in this Hobby always reading books and files. He has seen a lot of stuff. Always on the run visiting fairs and flea markets. I come to him when i have a question.

Thank you so much for your pertinent remarks. I look forward to receiving more info on this subject accompanied by pictures. I'd love to see some clear GTG examples in regard to my so believed 200 Gasmaske.

                        Cheers
