Hi Chap,

In my humble opinion these are made to fool collectors. A whole lot arrived in the UK 5 or 6 years ago along with SS Packung Vassenol footpowder that smelt like modern baby powder(I have an original tin of vassenol footpowder and it has virtually no odour). At the same time red tins of Frost salbe with SS designations also turned up. These items live and die on dealers lists, I sold all mine as repros for $50 and learnt my lesson. I believe there are better things to spend hard earned cash on.

I've always been suspicious of these as well.
But remember all the Allgemeine-SS ID cards (hundreds of them) found in the Danzig area about 15 years ago? The cards found were definitely original, all to the same unit (27th Standarte) and all dated mid-1934. The market was suddenly flooded with them and stayed flooded for ages, and the price of SS IDs went through the floor for years until they were absorbed by the collecting market. I wonder if it could be the same with the frost salbe tins etc.
I don't particularly like them, but I don't think I'd write them off as fakes either. The ones I've seen on the tables all seem to have that 'natural' age to them.
Just my opinion.
Does anyone know for sure what the source of these things is?

I had mine for a few years and thought they were good, I lost confidence when the footpowder packet was opened(spilt) and smelt like modern talc, maybe SS grenadiers needed sweet smelling feet! Anyway I ditched mine I personally have my doubts as to their authenticity but as you say it could just be a hoard, although the Czech connection worries me even though Prague was an 'SS City' so to speak. I am sure I'll kick my self when SS Packung soap goes on ebay/manions for $500 a bar!!
