MG patronenkasten in aluminium, what about finishing?

Just a question about Patronenkasten in aluminium.
Were these always finished with “red” anti oxide base and then over painted with dark feldgrau?
I’ve seen examples with and without the red base..

It might have depended on the producer. Aluminium doesn't hold paint well so you can find many alu items which have peeled off most of the¡r paint, while other boxes still have most of it. It might be because some have a primer and the others don't. This also happens with steel ammo cans and drums.
