    Help, identification gasmask canister manufacturer

Hi. This is my first M38 gasmask with canister, matching numbers.
Please, can you help me to identify the markings on canister? I mean the symbol on closing latch and the marking DITMAR on spare glasses compartment. I suppose Ditmar is the manufacturer, but i only found a "Ditmar lamps oil manufacturer in Vienna"... I hope someone can help me. Thank you!

Ditmar was indeed an Oil lamp company in Austria but during the war many other things were deemed more important than what they originally made. Being experienced in metal items they started to make gas mask canisters and even some gas masks. Ditmar exported gas masks (the Leder B type of gas mask) to Denmark and had German army contracts to make canisters like yours.

Thank you very much! Can you post some link (if it exists) about what you told? Pratically is the same situation about the "Roeckl,J. Handschuhfabrik, Munchen", maker of gasmask filters marked CLF. Evidently in war time they didn't produce only gloves!

I guess you don't understand the processes of WAR ECONOMY if you writing this kind of statment.

In war economy every sector of economy is involved in production for war effort; the commercial production of goods is hold completely or at very low level as war goods production has a high priority and all or most of resources are used for war production. Those of the makers who are not involved in war production usualy fall, as commercial trade is disrupt.

The peace time producers of commercial goods are making only the war goods , commercial items, but in much lower level prior to war burst, at the same time as the war goods.

So not something strange that commercial makers made war related goods.

Ditmar is the maker of can.
The closing latch makers is completely other company who later in war have 'frn' code.

There were make makers of cans but only one maker of closing latches ( at least from at some point of war ).

The marking on closing latch which is visible on your can is typical marking for period of 1938 till 1940.

Later in war the symbol, as visble on your can , was replaced with code 'frn' ( 1941 till end of war ).

Of course i understand. I know very well what you said. In fact i did compare Ditmar with Roeckl, J., Handsschuhfabrik. In peace time they produced oil lamps and gloves, in war time they produced gasmask filters and canisters. I just wanted confirmation Ditmar was a gasmask canister maker in war time.

I cannot give you any written information about this, only what I have encountered over the 25 years I collect gas masks. I have a gas mask in my collection with stamps of DITMAR in and on the mask and I know of several other examples in other collections. So, Ditmar did have a hand in the war. This is only logical because army contract were very lucrative and gave the company a certainty of payment and workload.
