The can itself is of course original, but the tropical camo isn't IMO (painted over pitting beneath).

I can`t believe that there are still comments like "Rust under the paint"! What if a soldier joint the Wehrmacht in 1935 or 1936... in 1942 his Gasmask was in use for 6 or 7 years, it was in the Sudetenland, in Poland, France, Norway, Russia... Do you really think that there was no Rust on it?

But anyway, this one isn`t a good one because it`s a late one, the "D" marked are introduced in nthe last stage of war...

My thoughts exactly - seems to be common sense that only freshly handed out cans were overpainted...

A gasmask can does not rust that much in only some years of use. Above that, the soldier had to care for his equipment. Never ever will it have an uneven surface formed by deep rust marks.

Agreed. It takes many years of exposure for metal to "pit" from rust. Of course there would be rust present on all cans used in combat after a while, but pitted metal is different. Try putting a steel item outside to rust (even spray it with water every day) and see how long it would take to pit. Good luck!

But I have to say, why do you tell about rust?
In my hand I cannot see rust... I see only spread areas of lack of paint. In these areas we can see a red brown paint as if the can had been first painted red brown and then tan.

But anyway, this one isn`t a good one because it`s a late one, the "D" marked are introduced in nthe last stage of war...

Hello Dirk I know that the "D" modified can had been produced since the end of the 1941.
So this can, dated 1942, naturally has not been not used in Africa, in fact its color is not characteristic, but it is perfectly compatible with the Italian campaign, from 1943 onwards.

There is no red brown paint ; what you see as red brown paint is actualy a rust.

No doubts that this one here is a post war creation. See the heavy rust in the inside of the can (around Klarscheibenfach) and compare to the clear outside. Even the clasp strap has been added. Someone put a lot of work into it. Not one I would buy.
