    Fur covered pack

    Hello,

I have a chance to purchase a German pack, the outside flap of which looks like it's made from the hide (with hair) of a red-colored deer. It has a lot of leather straps and aluminum snaps. One piece of the leather has a maker mark, 1939, and "Berlin" on it. I don't have a picture yet, but I was was hoping this poor description might be enough for you guys to make a stab at an identification. If someone posted a photograph I'd probably recognize it. Sorry for the lack of photos; any ideas? Thanks,

    Harvey

Hi Harvey, what you have been offered is Tornister pack. They came in two patterns, the M34 which had straps or the M39 which did not have them so the pack would fasten to the Y Straps.

The troops did not use these in action, but were used in marching order: most were left in unit transport.

    Here is mine.

    Cheers, Ade.

Thanks Ade. The one I'm offered does not have the straps, just aluminum clips to hook it to something else, otherwise it looks like yours. The price is $85; is that good?

Hi Harvey, the price is the same as I would expect to pay here in the UK. I know that there is some difference in prices between Britain and the US. Do a search on US sites to be sure But it does not sound a great bargain.

As the pack lacks straps it will be an M39.

Search the word "Affe" here on the forum. (this is the German for "Ape" which the pack was nick-named) it will bring up a lot of threads

        Cheers, Ade.
