    New reproduction Zelts.

I never thought I would see the day when splinter Zeltbahns would be reproduced. Well, that time has arrived. Yesterday a dealer had a mixture of worn originals and brand new repros. He brought them back from Germany. Originals were priced at $90, repros (because they were "mint" in his eyes) were $100. An effort to show him why was fruitless. So, these things are now on the market. I suspect that some enterprising individuals will soon cut them up and make nice "field made" uniforms. For your information. These repros should not fool those who have a clue. They are nicely done but lack the feel and smell of originals.

I think they are selling for $70 at the source in Germany.

Actually, Willi, they are $35 at the source in the US! I've not seen one yet. But, I've heard that the color is not really that convincing. Good for reenacting. That's about it.

Jack, maybe we are talking about a different batch and manufacturer. The ones I saw came out of Germany. They looked pretty nice. Who is making the ones you know about?

Willi, the ones that I have seen out of Germany are being made by Sturm. I'm a Sturm dealer. My cost on these are $35 apiece. They sell for about $100 at shows.

We renactors buy the repro ones for use at outdoor events, althought my own 4 panels have held up for 60+ years, its nice to have new fully waterproof ones .

Could you guys provide a couple of photos of these repros?

            Thanks.

There are three companies out there making repro zeltbahnen that I know of:

              1. S&M Wholesale. These are VERY close. They are marked ""Warei" Zeltbahnen DRP". The feel is close, colors are absolutely spot on. Cost about $125 each. I assume the thread wound not pass the burn test. I have 4 of these and people mistake them for originals all the time now that they have gotten dirty and worn. I have had them set up as a tent next to an original tent and you cannot tell the difference.

              2. Bayonet Inc. Ugly colors and stitching. But OK for reenactment use. $80

              3. Sturm. Color is OK, not sure if both sides are different camo schemes? Also these are kind of thin and I'm not sure how well they would hold up if used as a tent. I would like to buy 4 of these. Jack Melvin, send me a PM, can you sell me some?

                      Repro Zelts

                      Kameraden:

I sell the repro zelts from Sturm. For the price they are very good for reenactors. Some photos are here:

The colors are better then in the photos, I still have problems with lighting and getting the colors right in the photos!

Just to add, a number of repro zelts were made for the film "Saving Private Ryan" they were pretty good when aged, but as on all of these I have seen the hardware is not even close....
