The leather has PINNE 1940 and an Eagle and swas .There were more words but they have worn away .I cant find any stampings on the actual shovel .Rob.

Dutch Name on Shovel...

Very interesting shovel with carrier Rob! Westra is actually a Dutch name, so it might be possible that you have the shovel of a Dutch volunteer in the Waffen-SS. Where did you buy it?

Careful... Is it a Dutch postwar shovel in a German carrier? If in the folded position (as when in the carrier) but with the lock nut fully tight, the shovel head and handle are seperated angularly by about 15-20 degrees, it is a German shovel.

If the head folds completely flat against the handle even after tightening the nut it is a Dutch shovel. There are some other differences, but this is the one I remember at present.

Greetings Fellows: Great collection of shovels and well marked...impressive! Are any of you familiar with the early model solid handle(spaten) , but one that has a saw toothed edge on one side? Is is German or some other European country. What era would it be? Thanks and all the best!

I know that saw edged shovels were used by at least France, Holland and Austria at the end of the 19 and beginning of the 20th century. I wouldn't be suprised if Germany had some also at that time. Any markings?

I suspect the shovel to be one used by Austrian forces but German made! The saw toothed feature must be a kid of "trench art" Anyway I easily can imagine the handy and useful help of such a design. So what to say!! it's a very personal decision.

So far as I can tell, there is a Wartberg in both Austria and Germany. But the "Noot" name is a little funny. Looking at it, by shape of the handle, I'd think it was perhaps a Dutch one, but for the time being I'd call it Austrian to be safe. I know Austria had a flat fronted saw toothed Linneman pattern shovel at one time. It could be German, for all I know, but the handle shape isn't typical. But it sure isn't a WWII produced shovel. It would be better off representing the Boxer rebellion, or maybe WWI. Nice shovel. You don't often see the saw toothed ones over here. And yes, it was a factory done thing. Good idea, helps you get through stubborn roots, and it works for a little while, till the teeth get worn from digging ordinary dirt.
