Help for cleaning or not

Hi all,

I've this german grenade ( desactived ). As you can see, rust is here
I need advice about it : cleaning or not, and what is the best treatment to apply ?

The rust has really taken hold here. If you Brillo'd it down it would come out looking clean but rather pot marked and horrible. I would remove the wooden handle. treat it with linseed oil and give the metal end cap a squirt of WD40 (this is coming from a plane restorers pov here!) to prevent further rust.
I would keep it in its original condition.

Just remove the loose rust with a soft brush and (as said by Matt) keep it from rusting any further.

Will the rust that is on it continue to cause damage? I was under the impression that since it has been removed from the elements, no further decay will continue. Personally, I would leave it like it is.
