Not necessary, I am sure you also have found over the years many Wehrmacht pouches or boxes with other contents than their original meaning.. ;-)

They might be meant 1st for tankers or navy artillerie gunners, or any other soldiers who moved inside tiny rooms.
But that theory is not confirmed yet.

And just for the filter? Or for the filter with mouth/-nosepiece?
