Hi. This canteen came fresh out of the woodwork and wasnt in collectors hands before. Condition is super mint.

On early canteens (like this one) are always mounted aluminium cups, and between 4 and 5 hole can clearly see an outline left by aluminum.

Is it possible to see war time pictures where are clearly possible to see these canteens with light brown straps?

Long time ago we discussed also for the DRK ... and it has been shown that the DRK used everything, light brown and black straps

Second; till 1939 all leather equipment for army was made from brown leather ( everything changes in autumn 1939 when new directives came and army equipment was made from black dyed leather ) - this is example of pre war army canteen - nothing more nothing less.

Pre war canteens ( this a very fine example of pre war canteen ) were ALWAYS used with wide, aluminium cup iwth handles. The bakelit cups were introduced in very late 1940/early 1941.

So the cup was added at some point ( by pre war/wartime woner or postwa user or by other collector ).

For reference.....a wartime canteen with all brown straps. All-matching ZPstZ, 1941. Marked ZPstZ 41 on on body, cap, strap, felt, cup.

In my first post I said 'could' be Gendarmerie. I did not say brown straps always mean it has to be gendarmerie. IMO at least in the pre-war years Gendarmerie would have used predominantly brown leatherwork. The canteen in the thread I posted earlier confirms this as it has the same natural brown straps as the subject canteen and is Gendarmerie stamped. I have no doubt that in the war years this distinction was dropped and all kinds of canteen models and colours were used by all all forces including the various police forces. Nothing in this sense is strict or 100% as we all know, both before and during the war.

Obviously there are many examples of pre-war and wartime army canteens with brown straps (again that is why I said 'could' and not 'should') but I disagree with the assumption that all pre-war army leather should be brown and only dyed black in/after 1939. For instance I own a full matching 1934 canteen with standard black leatherwork.

I have two mint untouched 37 and 38 canteens and they have pure black straps. The brown strap theory does not fully work...
