    late war canteen

Hi guys I just got this canteen. As you can see the felt cover is the late war model and with 3 buttons. Nice webbing straps to it.

My concern is the bottle itself. Its an alumenium bottle and it has the strangest markings ???

    It says H.W.S.D. 237 ??

The cup has no markings and are close to mint unlike the felt, so Im thinking the cup came to later on. But did the aluminium bottle too ??

    Thanks for watching

It is obvious put together. The bottle is marked february 37 ( 2 37 ) and rest is mid to late war. All original but put together ( hard to say when exacly ).

Yes I would think so too, but the well-known dealer KPEMIG Militaria has one with the same felt cover, webbing straps, green painted metal cup and also, a alumininum bottle ?

So would this felt cover have had a red steel bottle perhaps ?

          Yes indeed.

The cover is indeed late war, which normally was issued with painted steel bottles.
But at the end of the war they combined everything due to shortage..

                Canteen.

Why put a iron bottle to this cover ? This can be made in WW2 time. The iron rust and let a bad taste on drinking water. If soldiers found an aluminium bottle, they use it !
